Yeah i don't think it's worth learning french for almost any reason, lots more people speak spanish

[-] thawed_caveman@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago

I'm in France and my cousin married an American.

Cost of living is high and the language is bullshit, but the standards of living are some of the best in the world. Very old established democracy and rule of law, workers rights, social security, and whatever the complete opposite of political apathy is. Culture is rich with a disproportionate level of global relevance for the country's size. The location is ideal in the middle of europe, with a good variety of landscapes and climate.

Internet is cheap and fast, but i don't know anything about the state of tech jobs.

I don't know much about the tax system either but my assumption is you might save money just on the healthcare alone.

Overall i wouldn't recommend, you'd be better off in a country with a language closer to english, such as most countries north of France. They'll have better english proficiency and you'll learn the language easier.

I was gonna say Tesla but he actually bought that company, and it doesn't do as well anymore

[-] thawed_caveman@lemmy.world 6 points 3 hours ago

I don't think this is real. Not because it's a crazy scenario, but because the aliens would definitely make a better simulation.

Frankly all i wanna do is escape this reality, so

It's like a graveyard of companies that Microsoft has acquired over the years. Sharing files is one brand name (Sharepoint if i recall), making video calls is another name, planned events is another - every function has a brand name to it, which made me feel like these were the last remaining trace of long-absorbed companies.

But that's just my recollection, i haven't touched Teams since Covid

True, but this design philosophy is currently omnipresent in electric vehicles. I guess i shouldn't say never, maybe someday they'll make an electric Lada and i'd buy that in an instant

[-] thawed_caveman@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

Imagine being in a burning car and needing the manual to open the doors. And then you can't find it so you start googling "Tesla model S manual", find a PDF, then start scrolling through it trying to find out how do you open the doors.

Here's an idea, how about just make it so the handles mechanically open the damn doors? This is why i'll never own an electric car, they're full of bullshit like this where things are done electronically for absolutely no reason. I hate this fucking design phylosophy where everything has to be more complicated, less reliable and less functional.

I had to switch Mastodon instances because of leftist infighting.

There are no Taco Bells in my country but if this aired i'd take a flight to go burn one down.

Yeah. Israel gets to colonize Gaza, Putin gets Ukraine, and he doesn't have to go to war with the USA because there's a known russian asset as president.

I agree that Trump will end a couple of wars by making sure that the bad guys win them. Just surrender human rights and dignity, let white supremacist dictators take over, let a couple genocides happen, war prevented, great success.

Oh, and meanwhile poor people and LGBT are persecuted in America. Doesn't matter, war prevented.

The stereotypical image of a Trump voter is an overconfident bully, but let this be proof that you can also vote Trump out of complete cowardice. I, recluse nerd, cannot comprehend being so pusillanimous that you put a dictator in power just because you're scared.

The owner of my laundromat claims that it's cheaper to do your laundry there than at home. At first i thought "of course a laundromat owner would say that", but then he argued that his machines are more efficient than the ones we buy and that they are collectively heated.

I still think he's fulll of shit because he only argued about energy costs, not including his rent taxes or profit; but it did get me thinking that it would be cheaper and more efficient to wash our clothes collectively.

Back then, this would have been a bold combination of emerging technologies.

I've been the main moderator of the same community since 2016. This evening, i approved my last comment.

I'm leaving for two reasons:

  1. Reddit went public a week ago. I didn’t volunteer to work for a publicly traded company, i volunteered to work for a community. As long as i live under capitalism i accept that my labor will generate value for shareholders, but damned if i ever do it for free. (this is not a Faulkner quote)

  2. April 1st is coming and i'm scared they might do another r/place. Doing in r/place 2022 and 2023 has left me dejected and bitter and i don't want to feel obligated to participate again.

Leaving felt like ripping myself off of something warm i've been comfortably glued to for a long time. Still recommend it for anyone still giving Reddit shareholders free labor

EDIT: there are too many comments to respond to, but i've appreciated all of them! Thank you

Whenever a forum dies, a lot of answered questions are lost that would have been useful to people googling it in the future.

Reddit is like the mother of all forums, and it also has had a lot of internet history being made on it.

I really think we need a Reddit archive that is availabel for random people from Google. The best case scenario is that Reddit just limps on for years, therefore doing this conservation work better than anyone else could.

Almost always my movies even though i have tons of music, and always the most obscure shit. I have Disney movies and Breaking Bad, but people go for the auteur french sci-fi animated features.

Soulseek gives me much the same joy of sharing as torrent does, perhaps more so because it's one-on-one with a username instead of an IP.

It's very easy to contribute to Soulseek as opposed to torrent, you just mark your shared folders. I think there's probably more content as a result, at the cost of the inefficiency of multiple people offering the same thing. Which i'm not sure matters.

I don't know if the rooms are really worth it. You only get the messages starting when you logged in, so you can't catch up to what happened before; this problem is particularly relevant because most rooms are dead; those that aren't dead consist of a lot of vicious arguments; and it's live chat anyway, never my favorite format for discussion.

I prefer Soulseek to eMule just because it works, but i also found it simpler.

Unfortunately my VPN doesn't play well with Soulseek, apparently it doesn't support port forwarding? I'm not sure how to fix this. It may in fact have been a problem when torrenting too the whole time and i didn't notice.

Overall i really enjoy Soulseek and will probably always have it in the background, it's pretty great!

According to Wikipedia, the lastest version of eMule was released in 2010, but "official forum users" developed an updated version as of 2017.

Is this information up to date? Is that still true? I'd feel a lot better installing something on my computer that was last updated at least in this decade, which version of eMule should i pick, if any?

EDIT: i'm downloading this.

Thanks everyone!
