I actually really like the design with the shells for eyes. Until I read the text, I thought they were fireworks or something like that.
Is this something they have done in the past or is this because they are holding the Expo in Osaka next year?

Weekly ranking roundup:
Credit to /u/Abysswatcherbel for making the chart for reddit karma and /u/Nooble5 for the Anime Trending chart.
It is a Dan Da Dan sweep across all three charts this week. The show is on a tear up against the big hitters of Re:Zero and Bleach. We will see if it can maintain this as it moves into a new arc with episode 5.
I did not think it was going to be possible, but something dislodged Bleach from the top spot over on AC. Congrats on beating my expectations Dan Da Dan. Two other shows had some tremendous leaps up the chart this past week: Orb and Demon Lord 2099. I am really glad to see Orb getting some recognition as it has been truly excellent so far.
Wow, this is big. GKIDS handles a lot of the NA distribution for the most popular anime films (Ghibli, Shinkai) already, but this gives Toho a direct line in and allows them to integrate the existing distribution network and contacts that GKIDS has.
My biggest hope is that this can mean more theatrical screenings of anime films with less of a delay from the domestic Japanese release. I know that is a bit optimistic of me though.
There were lots of production issues with Uzumaki. One of the producers actually posted about it after episode 2.
Obligatory shoutout to !anime@ani.social if you want a more anime-focused discussion. Of what I have watched (or seen enough of to make a judgement) there are a couple standouts. Note that I haven't really watched much western animation in recent years.
Wildcard answer would be Star Wars Visions. Each episode is done by a different animation studio, so it can be up to personal preference as to which ones you like, but there are some great showcases in the show.
Edit: If you care a lot about animation quality, I would recommend checking out the SakugaBlog. It goes into deep dives on Japanese animation. For example, they did a whole running series on Frieren (link to the first article).
One thing I really like about Akane's backstory here is that up until this point in the story I had assumed that she got deep into psychology in order to better understand her characters to help her acting. However, what we really find out is that she studied up so much in order to better understand her idol, Kana, lashing out at her in what became an extremely formative moment for the young Akane. The fact that it helps her with her acting (and Aqua-sleuthing) is merely a coincidental side benefit.
Her years of experience and psychoanalysis have led to this moment with Kana. It is like Akane has come out of her acting hyperbolic time chamber ready to fight the big boss...only to find out that they gave up already. I can understand how immensely underwhelming and disappointing that would be. @rikka@ani.social
There were so many great visuals this episode. Practically all of the Akane/Kana showdown is told either via flashback or visual metaphor. We don't really see what the audience sees here, we see things like the moment that led these two toward this path:
Or, we hear their inner monologue as their out-of-character personas act out their feelings:
This show has been a visual feast from start to finish, and I cannot wait to see what this play's final act is going to look like.
Summer has settled into a bit of a groove. So, here is where shows that I have been watching currently stand:
Agreed. I loved the first season and am really looking forward to another.
It's hard not to feel bad for Goa in this situation. I have been in similar situations professionally where a series of intermediaries massage communications to the point that the message is completely different at the other end of the chain. Instead of scripts though, my work is much more technical, dealing with manufacturing and testing processes. These days I am in a senior enough position with enough experience to usually cut a couple layers out of that and speak more directly with the other engineer/scientist on the other side.
This episode was primarily focused on how the sausage got made instead of the drama around our main cast. However, even though they weren't in the episode very much, Kana and Akane still are getting the full budget allocated to eye animation @rikka@ani.social
I see that the pregnant pause joke is going to be a recurring theme this season. I think it worked better last episode with Eris, but it was still funny this time. To be honest, I was surprised to see Kazuma get his money from Vanir. I always expected that promised payout to be "almost ready" in perpetuity.
It seems like the next arc is going to be Darkness focused. She gets the prophecy about her family, there is some competition she is training for, and then that scummy noble is looking at a portrait of her on the wall. Speaking of her training...I guess it is going well? She seems happy at least. @rikka@ani.social
My favorite part of this episode was Vanir. He is such a ham and the way he can create humor through selective application of his abilities is top tier stuff.
Alright, I feel like this show is getting some undeserved hate due to the title. And yeah, the title is really dumb. But this show was actually a lot of fun in a turn your brain off kind of way. It was at least way more creative than most other low budget copy/paste isekais out there. I am really looking forward to a second season.
