V8.8: 11-Sep-2023 by wavemotion-dave

Major cleanup of the Coleco ADAM driver so that most games now load up first try and RESET handling is smooth and consistent.
For the ADAM, added toggle between full keyboard and the joystick/joypad so now you don't have to choose one layout or the other.
Simplified keyboard handling. Now the user just picks 'Full Keyboard' and the emulator will figure out the best keyboard overlay to use based on the machine being emulated.

Clock Signal ('CLK') is an emulator for tourists that seeks to be invisible. Users directly launch classic software, avoiding the learning curves associated with emulators and with classic machines.

macOS and source releases are hosted on GitHub. For desktop Linux it is also available as a Snap.

This emulator seeks to offer:

single-click load of any piece of source media for any supported platform;
with a heavy signal processing tilt for accurate reproduction of original outputs;
while minimising latency.

It currently contains emulations of the:

Acorn Electron;
Amstrad CPC;
Apple II/II+ and IIe;
Atari 2600;
Atari ST;
ColecoVision;
Commodore Vic-20 (and Commodore 1540/1);
Enterprise 64/128;
Macintosh 512ke and Plus;
MSX 1 and 2;
Oric 1/Atmos;
Sega Master System;
Sinclair ZX80/81; and
Sinclair ZX Spectrum.

Commodore Amiga emulation is also present, but for now remains wilfully inaccurate.

On the Mac it is a native Cocoa and Metal application; under Linux, BSD and other UNIXes and UNIX-alikes it uses OpenGL and can be built either with Qt or with SDL.

This release:

continues improvements to the MSX 2, especially its video chip and this emulator's automated detection of cartridge types;
corrects the 65c02's BCD results, where they differ from a vanilla 6502;
corrects the 65816's state after a BRK while in emulation mode; and
resolves some timing discrepancies in some of the unofficial NOPs on the base 6502.

    overview

This program is a modified version of PC6001V, a PC-6001 emulator written by Yumitaro, to run on Linux and other platforms.
The X at the end of PC6001VX stands for cross-platform X. (^^;
The target is UNIX-like OS such as Linux and Android, but we have also released a Windows binary to verify portability. (^^; The target is UNIX-like OS such as Linux, etc. and Android.
2. how to boot
2.1. what you need

ROM file
In principle, a ROM file sucked out from an actual PC-6001 series machine is required to run the emulator. Refer to this page to extract the ROM file from the actual device.
If you do not have an actual machine, you can use a compatible ROM created by Akikawa Corporation. The compatible ROM is built into the emulator binary and can be enabled in the settings.
When using a compatible ROM, operation is equivalent to either the original PC-6001, PC-6001mk2, or PC-6601.
The required ROM files are as follows.
Warning
	The ROM will not boot if the file name is in the wrong case except for Windows. Please be careful.

While digging games from my notes for the ROMs public sheet (I'm still updating it), found some games for "OpenDingux" systems.

Looking for info on those systems, they're allegedly Linux-based systems that run on certain handheld consoles.

Now, while digging to see if there's a way of playing such games, either through emulators or VMs, I couldn't find anything, which brings the question: Is it possible?

Disable by default message confirmation after snapshot and AVI video
capture, but leave the option there for those who want to enable it (joncampbell123).
Remove "LOG: Logging output has been disabled." output when -nolog
is specified on the command line (joncampbell123).
Fix stuck Ins key problems by fixing a typo in src/ints/bios_keyboard.cpp.
The code is supposed to clear the "Ins key down" flag, but instead cleared
all bits EXCEPT "Ins key down" (joncampbell123).
NE2000 macaddr default is now "random", which instructs the NE2000
hardware at startup to pick a random MAC address. (joncampbell123).
IPX: If NE2000 and IPX are enabled, and an IPX tunneling connection is
active, and the user boots a guest OS, switch on a mode where all IPX
packets going to and coming from the guest are re-routed through the
IPX tunnel instead of to the NE2000 ethernet backend. This feature
makes it possible to play IPX-based games in a guest OS like MS-DOS
and Windows 95. (joncampbell123).
IPX: Add extension to server to allow clients to register their own
MAC address instead of using the default MAC address given by their
IP address and port number. The extension is designed so that if DOSBox-X
is a client to another DOSBox fork's IPX tunneling server, it will
be ignored and DOSBox-X will get the usual MAC address instead. This
extension is required for guest OSes to be able to use the IPX protocol
through the NE2000 card given upcoming code changes as they normally
use the network card MAC address when picking an IPX address because
the IPX interface is not available once booted into a guest OS. (joncampbell123).
IPX client: If both IPX and NE2000 emulation are enabled, IPX emulation
will use the NE2000 card's MAC address instead. It will use the IPX
server DOSBox-X extension to try. If it doesn't work, then the normal
MAC address assignment is accepted without complaint. (joncampbell123).
NE2000: Add "nothing" backend. It receives nothing and send packets go
nowhere. If no other backend is available, this backend is a fallback
so that at least the NE2000 emulation can work. The other purpose of
a nothing callback is to give NE2000 something to talk to for those
who wish to use the upcoming IPX packet redirection to link DOS and
Windows games over the IPX client or server connection to other
instances of DOSBox. (joncampbell123)
Added record function to capture NE2000 network traffic to a
pcap/Wireshark file in the capture directory. (joncampbell123)
Fixed bug where guest VM reset causes the CMOS to stop ticking for
exactly the amount of time it was running before reset. (joncampbell123)
Added alarm interrupt function to RTC CMOS emulation (joncampbell123)
Reverted DOS to using the BIOS_DATA tick count for time and the cached
copy of date it keeps internally, rather than always calling INT 1Ah.
It turns out that is how DOS actually behaves, which is also why it is
possible for the DOS and CMOS RTC to diverge. Fix CMOS emulation to
allow get/set time and to run in emulation time, not real time, though
the clock starts from the host time. (joncampbell123)
Fixed VHD disk image calculation of footer position and, thus, of newly
allocated block position. (maxpat78)
Enhanced Dynamic and Differencing VHD support #4273 (maxpat78)
Imported IBM Music Feature Card support from DOSBox Staging. (Allofich)
Fix IMGMAKE large size image error on MinGW builds (maron2000)
Set usescancodes=true when non-US keyboards are detected. (Linux / MacOS
builds) (maron2000)
Fix day of week detection (INT 21h function 0x2Ah). (maron2000)
Refine KEYB and CHCP command (maron2000)
Use segment descriptor's big flag (if present) when disassembling code in
the debugger code view (cimarronm)
Add decoding of rdmsr/wrmsr instructions to disassembler (cimarronm)
Fix disassembly for far jmp/call decoding (cimarronm)
Fix memory limits on expand-down segment descriptors (cimarronm)
Bump tinyfiledialog to ver 3.13.3 (maron2000)
Fix mouse column limit on text mode (issue #4353) (maron2000)
Fix Blocek launching failure (issue #4385) (maron2000)
Bump in-tree FreeType library to ver 2.13.1 (maron2000)
Enable debugger function for MinGW builds (maron2000)

I know it's probably not a common thing for someone to want, but some people play on handhelds with 4:3 displays (Retroid Pocket 2+/2S), CRTs, etc. I'm just curious if 4:3 patches exist or could be made for emulated PSP games.

openMSX 19.1—Reflection—is a bug fix release for openMSX 19.0, as we found some rather nasty issues after releasing, mostly that LaserDisc support was broken. No new Catapult will be released, as it has no changes. Please read the release notes for details of the openMSX changes.

Thanks for those who gave us the feedback so that we found out about these issues.

Please note that this will be the last openMSX release that supports systems without OpenGL 2 or higher.

MAME 0.258 (www.mamedev.org)
submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) by PrimalHero@kbin.social to c/Emulation@kbin.social

Yes, it’s time for another release: MAME 0.258! It’s been another month of exciting Apple updates. Several low-cost Macintosh computers with 68040 CPUs are now supported, and there are fixes for some issues with sound playback. For earlier Macintosh computers, there are two new floppy disk software lists: one for original dumps and one containing low-impact cracks. Support for early CD-ROM drives has been improved, allowing early multimedia software for the Apple II and Macintosh to run. There are also a few Apple III fixes in there.

Moving on to other computers, Silicon Graphics workstation support is still making progress. This month, the Personal IRIS 4D family have been promoted to working. The ZX Spectrum family has been further filled out with another enhanced clone from Scorpion, Ltd. Work is continuing on various PC video and sound cards, allowing software that uses more of their advanced features to run. This month, you may notice better sampled sound playback when using the Sound Blaster ISA card. In some cases, software that would previously hang when playing sounds now works properly.

Two quiz games running on Namco’s System 12 are now working: Derby Quiz My Dream Horse, and Kaiun Quiz. A version of The Legend of Kage with different sound hardware has been added, as well as a location test version of Dogyuun and a version of Makaimura (released internationally as Ghosts’n Goblins) that fits in between two of the previously supported versions. Although it doesn’t provide much in the way of gameplay, Sega’s Wanpaku Safari ride, based on Saturn hardware, has been dumped and added.

As always, far more has happened during the month than we have time to talk about here. You can read all about it in the whatsnew.txt file, or get the source code and 64-bit Windows binary packages from the download page.

NINTV-DS v4.2 (github.com)

NINTV-DS (aka Nintellivision) is an Intellivision console emulator running on the DS/DSi.

Improved JLP 16-bit RAM when it contends with similar 16-bit RAM specified in a config (.cfg) file (games like TNT Cowboy and A-F now run properly).
JLP Flash maximum increased to 64K per game.
Other minor cleanups and tweaks as time permitted.

Free42 is a re-implementation of the HP-42S Scientific Programmable Calculator and HP-82240 Printer.
It is a complete rewrite, not using any HP code. It does not require an HP-42S ROM image.
Even though it contains significant enhancements compared to the original calculator, Free42 remains fully compatible with the HP-42S, both in its user interface and in its ability to run programs written for the HP-42S.

I thought I would share an app for use with a fairly niche game in the Monster Taming/Sim/Raising genre, Monster Rancher on the Playstation (1). I don't expect many to know what this game is, but there might be a few that remember it. It frequently is called Pokemon ripoff or clone, but it's really a pet (monster) raising sim where you raise a monster up from a baby through it's life all the way through it's death. You can also cross-breed monsters (fuse them; parents are consumed in the process) to create new breeds or new babies with significant advantages over 1st gen monsters.

Monster Rancher had an interesting gimmick in that, while playing the game you could visit the Shrine, where part of the lore allows found "Disc Stones" (CDs) to be used at the shrine to create monsters. The game would prompt you to pop open the lid and put in any Music CD or other PSX game, it would read the meta data of the disc, then prompt you to re-insert Monster Rancher back into the PSX, at which point your new baby monster would be born.

In 2001 we discovered what data was being read and how to extract it from a disc so that the meta data could be shared without passing around copies of games and CDs themselves, then you could burn a blank disc with the meta data and use this to get special monsters that might be hard to get (or without having to buy hundreds of CDs/Games just to get a monster.).

In 2019 we fully reverse engineered the CD Read Process and how the game interprets the track data to create the monsters which allowed us to create an app to generate any monster on-demand and on the fly via the Make-a-Monster app. This process not only allows you to pick any monster on demand, but also any of the "random" stat offsets monsters can be born with.

With the Make-A-Monster files you can still burn physical media to play on console, or generate just the files for download to use directly in emulation where no optical drive is present and the app supports Duckstation, ePSXe (2.0.5), PSX, PCSX-R, CloneCD, ImgBurn

Monster Rancher 1 & 2 DX was released which is a remaster released in 2021 and includes a baked in CD Database to search and look for albums and songs, but for anyone still playing the original version of the game on Emulation, there's options for the CD Swapping gimmick for MR1 and MR2. One of the Monster Rancher community members has a ticket open with PCSX2 to try and get more emulator support for the Playstation2 versions of the later games but at the moment that's a bust.

Anyway, hopefully there's some ranchers here that will appreciate the research over the years that have lead to creating this :)
