How do people help MacOS GUI applications find user-installed executables on the
system?

@apple_enthusiast

I have been helping a friend with a very modern Macintosh follow
@bounga's tip
but it does not seem to work anymore. Which is weird, since it was updated in
July 2023.

I know that Apple doesn't typically enter into business by buying an established company in the sector, but rather does so in its own way, either by creating a company for that purpose and/or partnering with another company in that sector. There are examples of this, such as the Apple Card, Apple Studios, and Apple Energy, although the latter is only used internally.

But I've wondered why Apple hasn't launched its own ISP or Mobile Operator? For example, Google has one called Google Fiber and its mobile operator called Google Fi, although it's actually an MVNO.

The closest thing I've found to an ISP or Mobile Operator is Apple's 20% stake in Globalstar, which allows Apple devices to send an SOS message to satellites. I'd like to know if Apple has a division or subsidiary that is an ISP or mobile operator for internal use, or if they haven't wanted to venture into it due to the risks that may exist in that sector.

When you tap the Share icon—to open a dead link on an Archival website, to strip a YouTube link of the si tracking parameter, to Force Select All on a webpage—you see your iOS/Siri Shortcuts listed at the bottom.

As I should have known, re-arranging them is simple. No need to scroll to the bottom, edit actions, add to favorites, and drag around—unless they really are favorites.

No, instead, just open the Shortcuts app, tap Share Sheet, and re-arrange there. DUH!!!

Hardware: 27" 2017 iMac

Connection: Wired

Storage: 1TB SSD

Hi all. I installed Linux Mint on my Mac on an external drive, which was all good fun. But when I went back to boot into MacOS, I got the 🚫 symbol. Booting into recovery mode and running first aid revealed that the disk was corrupted. The only advice it gave was to run first aid in recovery mode, which I was already doing.

Whatever, no big deal, everything important was backed up. So I went ahead and erased the disk using Extended Journaled (I guess APFS is unavailable for Sierra, which is what recovery mode wants to install). I made an installer disk with a later OS but I just received 🚫 again upon selection. Ran first aid again and it passed. Backed out of disk manager and selected install MacOS. Then after about 3 mins. received the error "an error occurred while preparing the installation. Try running this application again". Tried several more times, receiving the same error every time.

The log reveals even more errors including:

  • "Could not find package ref in any source for:" 15 times for different packages such as "base system resources", "essentials", "OSInstall" etc.
  • No native mechanism to verify InstallESD.dmg
  • Couldn't mount base system dmg! (error code 110)
  • IATOOL: Failed the mount outer dmg

I have installed MacOS several times before, including on the same device.

TL:DR They don’t want to be forced to open features for the concurrency. My problem with the whole situation. The EU gets some nice features that some portion of users benefit from (AltStores , Sideloading) , but in exchange , we use other features that are far more useful. Like here , screen mirroring. There was a rumor that also AirDrop could loose/lack some functionality in the future (in EU). It is getting ridiculous. I know that the argument „if you want an open phone , buy an android, why did you buy iPhone if you don’t want ecosystem“ is not valid as there are situations where you can’t choose (family buying only iPhone, Job only provides iPhone). But I fear that my experience and reason why I bought into the Apple ecosystem will be harmed by this over regulation. I wanted it locked down and secure, I don’t want Google and Microsoft devices to be able to interact with my systems… the whole reason I ditched Windows and Android. Am I alone with that, anyone else who thinks so?

So the other day I went ahead and installed the current beta on my M1 iPad Pro to try out. I’m currently typed this in Arctic on the iPad right now in a window that doesn’t try to snap to pre-determined lanes! Crazy!

I have generally been using it with Universal Control from my Mac to get the mouse and keyboard over, and that - so far - works pretty well.

But I wanted to open the floor up to see if anyone else has tried it and what their opinions are. Or, if you haven’t and have a question about the windowing stuff, I or others might be able to field them.

For me, other than what I’ll chalk up to beta bugs mostly, I do think this has legs. Obviously not the full macOS everyone has been clamoring for, but it’s certainly usable and more or less works like you assume it works. Hopefully down the line Apple will figure out how to extend the background tasks to include stuff like running local servers/Node and whatnot for project development. But we’ll see.

There is some wonkiness when putting a window to the top of the screen, as it then has to do some battling with the clock/battery area and the new menu bar dropdown. At that point you have to click to get to the stop lights where otherwise you can just hover over them.

So anyway, how has the beta been treating you? Or if you have questions an interaction or whatever, we can all help answer them.

Edit: I’m editing this to share an article from MacStories interviewing Craig Federighi about the iPad:

I found icloud-for-linux, but it doesn't include Passwords. Any ideas if there are other ways?

EDIT: Coincidentally, I turned off prevent cross-site tracking, because I got sick of raindrop.io signing me out constantly. However, that seemed, I think, to have solved this issue. The only other thing I changed was to turn on the compact tabs view, but I don’t see how that possibly could have had any effect on this whatsoever. So I think maybe the cross-site tracking prevention thing is broken, or something along those lines

Apple love to preach "the UI gets out of the way of your content" with each new redesign, but how true is that in practice? Let's compare the total height of the Safari UI with a toolbar, favourites bar and tab bar visible, across the three latest Mac OS design languages – Yosemite, Big Sur and now Tahoe. I've added a red line for emphasis.

It sure looks to me like the UI is eating more into my content with each redesign.

Apple’s AI rollout has been rocky, from Siri delays to underwhelming Apple Intelligence features. WSJ’s Joanna Stern sits down with software chief Craig Federighi and marketing head Greg Joswiak at WWDC 2025 in Cupertino to talk about the future of AI at Apple—and what the heck happened to that smarter Siri.

My phone runs a bit hotter than it used to, but it's a beta so they'll probably reduce the effects to make it less of drain on performance and battery life. There is a reduce transparency toggle which does help a bit, esp. for readability. Hopefully when iOS 26 is released there's an obvious option to reduce transparency.

My opinion on the "liquid glass" is mixed. Some parts look pretty cool. The apps (Mail, Photos, etc.) use it quite well, with only some parts are transparent making readability a bit better. I really like the change to the search bars being at the bottom, makes the phone more one-handable. Safari doesn't look too good in my opinion, the glass effects are a bit much. The camera app just hid all the buttons, which is a bit annoying. You can have it show flash and live photos toggles in settings, which is good.

The lock screen effect with the "3d" photos is very cool, but the phone runs extra hot when it's enabled so I turned that off. The glassy clock is pretty cool and there's the option to make it normal again if you select "solid". Swiping up from the lock screen makes a weird glass effect with the edges distorted and lots of rainbow fringing, which looks a bit odd. When you swipe down you can see the home screen app icons until it's all the way down, then they all pop out of existence and the background is replaced. Bit jarring. Similar effect with swiping up, background changes with no transition, but the apps appear in an animation this time. Weird. I'm assuming this is probably a bug with the beta, at least I hope it is...

Onto the home screen. I think the "liquid glass" themes make the tinted icons look a bit better than just colour on black, I like that bit of customisability. I still do not get the "clear" icons, it quite literally is transparent and you can barely differentiate the icons. You can always swap it to the default, but there is still some annoying glass effects on app icons where it clearly isn't natively built (I'm guessing the glass effects is applied to all icons automatically incl. third party apps, but it doesn't look too great with some of them). The app folders look terrible though and the reflection/refraction is really distracting. The pop ups when you select text is especially annoying, popping up a huge bubble. I'll need some time to get used to that vs just clicking right to share, translate, etc. The control center is not very nice to look at but it works fine.

Overall, in places where it's used tastefully (in a lot of Apple's apps, for instance) it works quite well if a bit distracting. I like the lock screen and home screen customisation and the ability to change it to "solid". The glass effects are still quite distracting though. The reduce transparency toggle does help a bit with readability, but it's annoying that it's buried deep in accessibility settings. Not very accessible at all. The lock screen 3d effect is cool but is a bit subtle, and it makes the phone uncomfortably hot. There are still plenty of bugs, but that'll hopefully be fixed in the public release. I like the option for the tinted icons but do not get the clear icons. Camera app isn't too functional, just hiding everything isn't better than before! The iOS 26 beta is quite fun, if very buggy, and the liquid glass works in some places but doesn't work in all places.
