Notice from family

"16 June 1952 - 01 June 2025

It is with great sadness I have to announce the sudden passing of my brother Martyn.

For those that wish to attend his funeral it will be held at:

Hanworth Crematorium (TW13 5JH) Monday 30th June 2025 @ 12.20 with a small wake at a local pub afterwards to celebrate Martyn's life.

For those that can't make it we will be having a small wake at Poppyland Brewery, Cromer on Sunday 06 July between 13.30 - 16.30."

His Zythophile news letter was informative and always interesting.

But on Dec. 26, a tantalizing post appeared on the BeerAdvocate forum. During a recent shopping trip, a North Carolina beer drinker found a 6-pack of Newcastle Brown Ale, an easygoing British classic bearing an iconic blue star on its label. Lagunitas Brewing, the U.S. subsidiary of Newcastle’s parent company, Heineken, had been producing a different, more assertively hopped version for the American market.

“This is the real deal U.K. version,” they wrote.

Knowing better than to trust an anonymous internet commenter, I contacted Heineken to confirm. In spring 2024, Lagunitas shuttered its Chicago brewery, winding down domestic production of Newcastle Brown Ale. That move led to production returning to Heineken’s Tadcaster brewery in northern England. Fresh batches of the smooth, caramel-kissed brown ale floated across the Atlantic Ocean late last year and landed on store shelves.

We’re bringing back the original recipe,” says Adena McMahon, director of innovation at Heineken USA.

I guess the title says it all. I've always enjoyed a good beer, and really never had any sort of drinking problems. (Yes, I would get completely hammered in college, and on occasion after, I was married to an alcoholic, and never had those tendencies myself).

Just wondering who else has dealt with this? My mind still wants to sip a few beers in the evening, but my body just doesn't love it anymore. I can drink 2 beers, and have a better than 50/50 shot that I'll have a headache later, and feel sluggish. It's just not worth it, but I don't want to give up the social aspects of having a beverage with friends.

My question is focused on the social aspect. I enjoy the act of having a beer with my buddies. To me it's not really fun hanging out at my local brewery if I'm not going to have a beer. Just wondering who else has been through this, and how did you handle it?

Wanted to see how many folks out there drink a beer after a hard cardio session. When I do intense cardio that's usually at least 45 minutes with my heart rate steadily between 135 - 150 I seem to really want a cold beer afterwards. Hydration with carbs and moderate calories...not terrible I wouldn't think. I do drink water during the cardio though.

Magic Hat use to be one of my favorite breweries when I was first introduced to craft beer like 15 years ago. I just realized I haven’t seen any of their beer in stores in what seems like years. What happened?

I'm heading to DC for a couple days. Does anyone have recommendations for a local beer I shouldn't miss? I am open to pretty much all styles.

I fell away from drinking beer for a while, and after coming back to it recently I was distraught to find out one of my favorites, Bass, went out of production in the U.S. I especially liked to mix it with Guinness and make black and tans. Was curious if anyone else leaned on that beer, and if so, they had any recommendations to use in black and tans. I've tried a half and half with a Harp, and it's just not the same..

I live in Dallas

Beer for breakfast seems legit to me. The Internet has all sorts of opinions on the topic (as usual), but I feel like there are far worse breakfasts than having a nice cold satisfying beer. Carbs and calories with a little hydration thrown in there for good measure. As long as it's followed up with some sort of solid food an hour or two later I can't see anything wrong with it. Bloody Marys and Mimosa get a pass...beer is right there with 'em in my opinion.

I like citrusy and hoppy with clean crisp taste. I used to get the Green Flash West Coast IPA around 2017 from Trader Joe’s.

It was my introduction to the American IPA, and I fell in love with it. It was perfect to drink by itself without feeling bloated, and it was great to pair with food. Unfortunately they rebranded and changed the recipe and Trader Joe’s stopped carrying it.

I’ve been searching for a replacement ever since. I haven’t found many that are similar. I tried Sierra Nevada Electric Torpedo West Coast IPA tonight, and it was reminiscent of the Green Flash’s. I figured I’d ask beer experts for recommendations. Anyone have recommendations? I’m not a big fan of Lagunitas’ selection of IPA’s as they taste stout to me.

I wish there’s an app similar to Vivivo. BeerAdvocate and Untapped are woefully lacking in terms of suggesting similar flavor profiles.

Thank you in advance!

I figured I'd share the most substantive article I've seen on Anchor Brewing in several months and open it up for discussion here.

Still not much to go on as far as official updates on the progress of Anchor's potential reopening. The article does make mention of a local restaurant owner being told by the new owner, Hamdi Ulukaya, that he still intends to move forward with his commitment to reopen the brewery. However, there has been no official update from Ulukaya or Anchor representatives since last year.

It seems that we may still be very far off from enjoying Anchor beers again.

I'm considering putting in a couple of beer taps in a home bar i'm building, likely going to be a kegerator under the counter setup. I can only buy pony kegs at the smallest locally for beer however I do occasionally home brew and have some other kegs I can use. My question is, for anyone that has a beer on draft at home in kegs pony sized or bigger, is it worth it? It sounds great from my end but a lot of what I hear is that you get tired of drinking the same beers and that its hard to drink it all before they go off unless you drink a lot or have people over pretty regularly. Pony kegs are still 30 liters so that a lot of beer. I'm thinking two taps to help with always having the same type of beer but then again now you have 2 kegs with 60 liters of beer to go through but more variety, though I guess you dont have to run two kegs at all times. Anyways just wanted to get peoples thoughts as I don't want to go through the effort of putting it in if it will be a waste and I won't end up using it.

I’ve tried tons of beers, but I always come back to Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier. It’s smooth, refreshing, and has that perfect mix of banana and clove without being overpowering.

Plus, it’s literally the oldest brewery in the world (brewing since 1040)which just makes it feel kind of epic every time I drink it.

Simple, classic, and always hits the spot. Anyone else still love this one?

Last night I dropped $47 on a single bottle of barrel-aged imperial stout that had been "aging in bourbon barrels for 18 months with Madagascar vanilla and Ecuadorian cacao." The bottle shop guy talked it up like it was liquid gold – mentioning the brewery's GABF gold medal, "meticulous attention to barrel selection," and how this was a "once-in-a-lifetime experience."

I immediately bought it because it sounded so impressive. Got home, chilled it properly, used the right glassware, took my time with it, aaaand it tasted like expensive chocolate milk with a bourbon aftertaste. Good, sure, but not $47 good. Definitely not "I could've bought a decent bottle of actual bourbon for this price" good.

The worst part is I want to keep telling myself it was amazing because I'd spent so much on it. Posted photos on Untappd, Facebook, and Instagram talking about the "complex flavor profile" and "exceptional barrel character" when really I was just trying to justify the purchase.

I think I got caught up in the hype and the price tag made me assume it had to be special. Anyone else ever fall into this trap? And what's the most you've spent on a single beer that actually lived up to the cost?

Saw the 50th anniversary Jaws Narragansett cans and bought a 12 pack immediately. What’s a beer where the marketing tempted you more than the beer itself?

Every time I get a go to beer some big ass company buys them out and screws everything up (ie Alpine Duet out of San Diego). I know they were bought out by Anheuser-Busch InBev in 2015 but I never had an issue with the taste profile changing until the last couple weeks when the packaging started changing. These batches are skunky , bitter and just disgusting. I still get my hands on some in the original packaging and it is good but not finding that as much anymore. I see on Wikipedia that "In November 2024, Elysian began closing its Seattle facilities". Do you think that's why this has changed so drastically?
