I bought a Roku Stick the other day to take with me on trips so I can watch my videos in the hotel room. I hooked it up and installed the jellyfin app and started watching a TV show. After about a minute playback stopped and I was returned to the home screen of the Jellyfin app but the only thing that was listed were my libraries. I exited and re-entered the jellyfin app and started watching the same episode. The same thing happened.

Jellyfin logs: https://pastebin.com/eCPp3Tiu Transcode logs: https://pastebin.com/9uAVePbW

I only tried the one video, I'll try some others and see what happens.

[Edit] I tried a couple of other videos and they seem to be fine, must be something particular with that one video

So I've been using Jellyfin for a while now. I have a NAS running with a jellyfin server and I watch stuff on my PC or on my TV. This is concerning the TV... As is often the case with these low-to-mid tier smart TVs, the OS is slow and the UX terrible. The network adapter is also bad. Jellyfin and everything else about the UI and OS in general, is slow. The jellyfin client occasionally crashes, and some files sometimes stutter or otherwise struggle when streamed, despite working just fine when streamed on the same network on my PC (wired both).

I was thinking of doing a bit of a brain transplant on my TV here by running my TV needs through Nvidia Shield or similar. Now, as I understand it, of the common options, Nvidia Shield is more or less the ultimate option for this. However, it is somewhat expensive, and I don't really care about anything other than having a responsive UI, support for all the usual codecs, HDR, 4K and preferably also Dolby and Atmos. I also want to be able to use my soundbar. I don't need any of the gaming features, storage space etc. that the Shield also markets...

Are there other cheaper alternatives that would do just as well, or should I just get the Shield?

Update in the comments.

Hey everyone!

I'm super excited to announce that Jellyfin Rewind 2023 is finally here! Another year has passed, and it's time to look back at all the music you've listened to!

In case you don't know, "Jellyfin Rewind" is an open-source version of Spotify Wrapped (& co.) made specifically for Jellyfin, that I initially created last year. This year, I've made some improvements and added a few new features, and tried to make it as enjoyable as possible.

You can find more info below, but if you just want to see your Rewind, use the links below:

Links

Local Network / Self-Hosting

If your Jellyfin server is only accessible on your local network, you will need to self-host Jellyfin Rewind so that it's also accessible on your local network. Otherwise your browser will block the connection.
To do this, check out the GitHub releases page and either download the zip-archive or use the provided Docker image here. The zip-archive will need to be extracted into a folder that is served by a web server, like Apache or Nginx. The Docker image will need a to have port 80 exposed instead.

HTTP (works for both http and https Jellyfin servers, as long as they are accessible over the internet):

Make sure your browser shows "insecure" / no lock at the top after opening the link, otherwise connecting to your HTTP-only Jellyfin server might not work!

http://jellyfin-rewind-http.chaphasilor.xyz

HTTPS (only use this if your Jellyfin server has an https connection and is accessible over the internet, this is the best experience):

https://jellyfin-rewind.chaphasilor.xyz

Download your Rewind report!

Please, please, please download your Rewind report at the end!

Jellyfin's statistics aren't very exhaustive, and any additional data could help offer you more insights during next year's Rewind! Especially if you don't have the Playback Reporting plugin installed, this year's Rewind report might come in very handy, so keep it save!

If something doesn't work and you can't download the data, I'll be happy to help you resolve the issue.

Something isn't working!

I'm sorry to hear that! I spent a lot of time trying to make everything as robust as possible, but everyone has a different server and different media, so it's no easy task.
There appear to be some issues on iOS with the browser tab crashing, probably because it's crunching too much data. If it happens to you, please try again on a desktop browser.

If you have any other issues, please comment below and include:

  1. What isn't working?
  2. Which device are you using to view Jellyfin Rewind?
  3. How are you accessing your server? (local IP, public domain, https yes/no)
  4. A screenshot could be super helpful.
  5. If you are familiar with web development, some logs from your browser's dev tools probably have the highest chance of helping me debug the issue.

How does it work?

Glad you asked!
Essentially, Jellyfin Rewind loads most of the information about your music from your Jellyfin server, processes it on your device, aggregates some nice statistics, and then shows the result to you!

Your data never leaves your device; it's very similar to using the Jellyfin app on your phone.

Sadly the build in statistics of Jellyfin are pretty lackluster as of now, even with the Playback Reporting plugin, so that a lot of data has to be processed on your device. That's why it takes a few seconds to generate your Rewind report.

For next year, I might release a separate plugin that can use your Jellyfin server in order to crunch the data. This would also solve some of the connection problems that might happen this year. If you're interested in helping me with the plugin, please be sure to reach out!

Where's the source code?

You can find the source code on GitHub: https://github.com/Chaphasilor/jellyfin-rewind. There you can also find the files needed to self-host your own instance if you feel like it (under "Releases").
Self-hosting might actually enable you to use Jellyfin Rewind if nothing else works, because both Jellyfin Rewind and your Jellyfin server are running locally.

Can I help out somehow?

If you know something about web development, are a designer of some sorts, or have experience (or are curious about) developing Jellyfin plugins, I'd love to hear from you! There's so much I want to implement for next year's Jellyfin Rewind, and I need your help to bring all these ideas to life!

I had many more features planned for this year, but simply didn't have the time. I originally planned to launch back in November, and that obviously didn't work out :)

Thanks to everyone who uses Jellyfin Rewind, I sincerely hope you enjoyed it as much as I did!
See you next year!!! - Chaphasilor

I have jellyfin running on window 11. Things were working fine. Then yesterday my monitor stopped turning off after 15 minutes like it should. This happens every few months or so. So I rebooted, which often fixes it. When I did, jellyfin won't work anymore. I start it manually. So I click to start it, I see it show up in my taskbar on the far right, then go away. When I click on the up arrow, I can see the jellyfin icon, until I mouse over it. Then it goes away. So clearly it is crashing...

I went to the log dir, and the log file isn't updating when I launch. And the last entries are pretty mundane as well as before it started crashing.

I tried running the same command the icon was running in a cmd window, (Jellyfin.Windows.Tray.exe), and it did the same thing but no output like I was hoping. Tried adding a help arg... nothing.

Tried rebooting again of course. No luck.

So any ideas on how to debug this?

Some questions and comments on my experience.

My main motivation to switch was that emby seemed to be buggy on the client side, keeping track of what episode of what tv show and season I was on. I'm hoping jellyfin helps with that.

On the server side, I wanted to keep both servers running. But there were port conflicts. It was difficult for me to find in the Jellyfin docs the right config file to set the ports. So I ended up changing the emby ports. (Since I could find the emby config files.)

(I cross posted this on Plex too)

I'm looking to create an easy solution that is child/wife friendly. I'm hoping to get a set up going without internet. I however would like it to run like a Chromecast with plex.

I was thinking of a

Dell Optiplex 3020M Mini PC USFF, running windows 10

An external hard drive with content.

From here is where I have gaps. Could I set up a plex server offline on the device, with plex media player and use an Flirc remote with pre-programmed buttons?

Essentially, I'm trying to create the experience of watching Netflix on a Chromecast but with plex and a pc remote control of some sort (with pre-programmed buttons that load up content so kid and wife only have to press one or two buttons to get to their shows)

Thanks!

hey guys,

i have an old pc running truenas scale and a jellyfin app/docker at home. And i have recently replaced my router. Due to this, the IP adress of my truenass install changed, and i’m fine with that. But the Jellyfin docker tries to start up, but there’s only a couple lines in the shell:

„WARNING: Your user does not have sudo privileges so /usr/local/bin/k3s command will run on your behalf. This might cause permission issues.

Error from server: error dialing backend: x509: certificate is valid for 127.0.0.1, 0.0.0.0, 192.168.50.9, not 192.168.178.38“

the second line is what really concerns me. It seems that jellyfin is trying to use its old IP adress, but Truenas is telling it it can’t. I cannot interact with the docker through truenas’ shell and i am by no means an expert on linux-based stuff.

Is there a way to point it to its new IP adress, or am i better off making a new jellyfin install. I’d like to avoid the latter, because last time it took at least 5 hours to et it up and scann all of the files.

if you have a community that this post would fit better in, feel free to tell me.

Thanks for your help in advance!

I've set up a jellyfin server on a Windows desktop machine (yeah I know, not the best option). I think hardware server side is more than sufficient with i7 4790 3.6ghz, 3060ti, 32gb ram. For client I'm using Xbox One x with jellyfin client. The server is currently connected via WiFi. I'm getting playback stuttering after about 20 min or so of playback. I'm hoping to get some guidance for transcoding settings and general setup help.

I don't think it's simply wifi causing the issue as the playback bar on Xbox shows the video is buffered for several minutes ahead of playback location.

I want to check out jellyfin. Now I'm wondering which installation method I should choose. I'm on Linux Mint 21.2. It's in the Mint Software Mager as a flatpak, then of course there's docker and I found a reasonably clear guide to install it from the repo. I just want to dip in my toes and get up and running with a little hassle as possible. I mainly want to be able to play media on my Chromecast, so I'm wondering if DNLA will work on flatpak? Otherwise that would be my preference. Are there any other considerations or pitfalls?

Update: somehow the flatpak didn't work for me. I'm sure the issues would have been fixable, but the documentation is pretty much nonexistent. In the end I went with docker and now have my server up and running.

I am pretty new at all this. But I got jellyfin and such setup on my window box. I have a roku client and all that working. So now it is time to look into a standalone box to run 24/7. But I don't know what specs matter.

I have read that I need at least a 6th gen intel i7 or i5 to take advantage of a feature that helps with this sort of thing.

But outside of that. Does ram matter? How much of a drive do I need on the box? (Going to get a NAS for real storage). Any other specs that matter? I am hoping to go fanless (not because I know anything, but cause I want it to be silent), is that ok? And which flavor of linux is the most popular?

Hey all, I started hosting my own media server using jellyfin on a raspberry pi. This was mostly because I was new to the space and didn't want to invest heavily in hardware only to drop the project or find that I couldn't make it work for some reason.

I've now got it all set up and working, but the pi is absolutely not able to handle any sort of transcoding. So I'm now looking to upgrade the hardware.

Currently, I only need something that can handle transcoding two sub-4k streams concurrently. But I don't want to fully shut away the possibility of streaming 4k media. I should have the space for it, my current limiting factor is processing power.

Reading the jellyfin docs on recommended hardware, my understanding is that I should be OK if I get a recent Intel i7 CPU as long as it's got integrated graphics?

I am currently planning to build a small form factor PC and run it as a headless Linux (possibly Debian) server with jellyfin and everything else running in docker.

Mostly, I want to ask: does anyone with experience doing this have concerns or advice? In particular:

  1. Is just the CPU processing power sufficient for everything if the CPU is chosen correctly?

  2. If the CPU is not sufficient, is it difficult to set up a dedicated graphics card on a headless server?

When we say this 2.0.0 release is a major milestone, we honestly mean it. New features and bug fixes abound, but even behind the scenes the updates continue all the way to the foundation with us updating every single file in the app to support a new programming language. You can't get more monumental than that!

Read more on the blog to learn about some of the exciting new features, or read the full release notes.

I started using Jellyfin a few years ago as a shared backend for my Kodi boxes (CoreElec mostly but not exclusively). I use the Jellyfin plugin for Kodi, installed from the Jellyfin repo as per official instructions. I've stuck to defaults/recommendations in the plugin. I did this for the WAF (wife approval factor), because otherwise none of my family ever used it. Now I get a shared watchlist and can stop on one TV and resume on another.

I've been running into a problem, and after extensive troubleshooting, I'm at a loss and asking for help.

The Kodi boxes do not pick up new content when it hits my server, which happens fairly regularly as I am ripping my disc collection into a format that Kodi (and the little Arm boxes) support natively. Unless I restart Kodi or the Jellyfin plugin every day or so, they do not see any new files uploaded since their last restart and if it goes long enough, even watched status falls out of sync and I have to go through the lengthy process of resyncing that entire library.

If I restart my Jellyfin service, every Kodi box immediately reconnects within a minute but still nothing syncs unless I restart the client.

Is this a known issue (Google is pretty useless in this regard)? Is there an option I can change somewhere to force the check-in to sync on a schedule? Is there another plugin that would work and still show content "normally" in the libraries, as opposed to going into another screen? Or does everyone use the Jellyfin web frame client?

Thanks.

I've got a jellyfin instance hosted on my local desktop, and access it through firefox 90% of the time (10% is via the jellyfin roku app). I've done some googling, but nothing I've seen has turned up anything regarding this.... Is there a way to get MALSync to cooperate with the anime I have downladed, to automatically update a given anilist? I've seen it work with other anime sites, so it shouldn't be impossible.. but is it more effort to automate, than to manually update the anilist?

Sonarr, filebot, Plex (all pulling from tvdb), and the tvdb website itself, are all in agreement as to the episode number and title of some episodes in trying to add to my library. Jellyfin, also pulling from tvdb, insists on completely different information, in spite of the fact that it's getting the series ID correct, so supposedly pulling from the same data as everyone else.

Any idea what gives? Can I fix this? I'm starting to vaguely remember that this might have been the singular issue that originally got me to abandon jellyfin and try Plex back when I was first testing out my options a few years ago.

edit for more information:

I was adding the recent 3-episode OVA of Reincarnated as a Slime. The TVDB page is https://thetvdb.com/series/that-time-i-got-reincarnated-as-a-slime/seasons/official/0

They are episodes S00E10, S00E11, and S00E12. You'll need to be logged in and have your default language set to English, or it will default to showing the titles in Japanese.

My files are named using Filebot(using the same naming convention of the other several thousands of files in my library) as:

  • That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime - S00E10 - Visions of Coleus To Coleus.mkv
  • That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime - S00E11 - Visions of Coleus Great Phantom Thief Satoru.mkv
  • That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime - S00E12 - Visions of Coleus Purple and Roses.mkv

The only change made from the information on TVDB, is removing a colon from the titles.

Jellfin decides that:

  • the file for part one(E10) is actually titled as "Special - Coleus' Dream, part 2"
  • the file for part two(E11) is actually titled as "Special - Coleus' Dream, part 3"
  • and it decides that the file for part three(E12) actually does not exist on TVDB and has not match, and so uses the full file name as the title.

I have no idea where it's pulling those titles from, or why it refuses to match them to the TVDB info. TVDB is the ONLY metadata provider I have set anywhere in Jellyfin, unless it's not an option. And yeah, I have manually matched the show and selected the show ID linked above, even though it gets detected correctly automatically, regardless. I have also tried refreshing the metadata. Repeatedly. All of the other episodes, using the exact same filename convention, all match perfectly fine and get the correct titles, thumbnails, etc. Even so, I still moved the entire series out of my library and refreshed the library, doublechecked the filenames, and added the entire series back into my library. Changed nothing.

And yeah, I mean, I COULD manually edit the metadata on these three episodes. My concern is that I have many thousands of episodes in my library. Manually viewing, confirming, and editing each and every one is not an acceptable solution.
