Was he the former driver of that car?
He’s the regular driver of that car. The guy who crashed it is a junior driver of Mercedes. He was allowed to drive the car for one training session, so he can get his kilometers in. He needs to drive a certain amount of kilometers in an F1 car to get his Super License which he needs to compete in Formula 1. He will probably be the team mate of George Russel (the guy in the photo) next season.
