Lol is this a thing that I'm supposed to be doing? I'm not used to being around such a high proportion of tech people, and I'm struggling to tell when you all are taking the piss
You aren't around a high proportion of tech people, you're around a few tech people and a bunch of paranoid ex-Redditors. The amount of tech misinfo here is as bad as Reddit, so probably not a good idea to assume everyone here is smarter than you when they're just on the first peak of a Duning-Kruger chart.
New routers will usually update automatically, especially for security fixes, but still not a bad idea to take a quick look to make sure.
