I get that feeling too, like in 50 years when the rest of the world is studying what went wrong with the US, 2016-2024 will be the time period that they will be looking at...
This has been building up for a lot longer than that. Some people post to Reagan, but it's even older than that. I'd put it back to the early televangelist starting to get involved in politics. Swaggart, Graham, Roberts, Hubbard, Bakker, Falwell, and especially Pat Robertson. Bastard even tried to run for president.
Inevitably these discussions lead back to Nixon and his various paranoias.
