Dunno where you are but last I was looking there were some good older-brick-but-solid little blocks out in the inner west and down round Newport/Yarraville. But I hear you. Natural light and a functional kitchen are the non negotiables for me too.
I'm in the east, it's not a cheap area for sure but there's enough old stock apts that it's doable. I want to stay in this general area short term as a short commute is non-negotiable for me right now - I value that more than having the plants tbh. Long term I certainly won't be staying on here, possibly not even in Melbourne at all tbh.
I know this is in poor taste but I'll take your chillies :)
