In my experience, appliances wait until all service personnel are on holiday to break down. Then they magically start working again as soon as the ultra-exxy emergency repair person sets foot in the house.

100% correct. My washing machine did a fake death on NYE. Its ancient and owe us nothing, but still not the ideal time to die with a load of washing in it.
