add to that deepseek's premium features are not hidden behind a paywall and i have difficulty seeing how openai could ever be profitable if people can get openai's capabilities for free.

That's the thing: everybody doesn't have to use it because it's mostly useless. It's a homework cheating machine

Deepseek is open source and free to download and modify.

People are already downloading it, forking it, using it at home

No, it'll go obsolete. It's too resource intensive and the latest chips are not available because they can't cool properly.
