I'm rewatching Arrival after having watched Mickey 17 yesterday and going "what was that movie where they try to talk to the aliens". It's cracking me up that the top realdebrid result is from a torrent titled "41 best movies to watch when stoned (all High IMDB)"

I really couldn't remember so much from this movie though, so it's kind of nice watching it all over again. Can't believe it's 9 years old. I suppose in a few years the movie will finally be dated by the fact that they didn't use AI to analyse the aliens' language immediately

Easily ranks in my top 10 favourite sci fi movies. Villeneuve has yet to make a bad movie it’s astonishing

I feel changed after watching it. It's truly a masterpiece. What are your other top sci fi movies? I'm feeling inspired

You've got great taste!

What about event horizon?

[–] useless_modern_god@aussie.zone 4 points 4 months ago

It’s a good one but definitely not a top ten for me.

that's a great movie in so many ways, the science of it, the philosophy of it, the social impact and the personal decisions

and it's visually beautiful

As someone with an interest in linguistics and semantics I absolutely loved it - especially in a family full of men who only think maths and engineering matters

Suzette Haden Elgin’s Native Tongue series would be right up your alley

Ooh thanks for the recommendation, it really does sound exactly like what I'd be interested in. Will hunt it down on libraries

3 books in total. The first two I strongly recommend. The third one I found to be weaker. Warning - they're a confronting read. But if you could cope with the Handmaid's Tale then these are probably fine.

The synopsis definitely reads like a harder edged version of Handmaid's Tale. We read that for literature in year 7 or 8 (still not really coping with the reality of it coming to pass in my lifetime).

Harder edge is right. Some very very acute analysis and interpretation throughout the whole series imo.

Have you ever read any of Octavia Butlers' Parable series? It's been a while for me and my memory is shot but I recall them being very highly regarded speculative fiction, also with astute observations of where humankind is headed when SHTF. Don't think I'm ready to reread them atm with how I've been feeling about the world lately

Yep. I liked some of them, but found others a bit too speculative. Ms Butler is good, don't get me wrong, but Ms Elgin is better at the craft of writing.

EDIT: the above comes with big IMO.
