Anon described it as awkward silence. This implies that anon was picking up non verbal signals from their fellow students.

They're probably just extremely anxious and have zero self-confidence. Not autistic or anything, just naturally nervous about public speaking and is "reading" stuff from the crowd that doesn't exist because of that.
