Nah, you're probably right - I don't really pay attention to the meta because I don't care, but Intel has always been a bit of a black sheep.
My favorite ship is distinctly anti meta. I took the legendary DD, and spent 2/3 of my consoles and traits to increase turn speed so I can use dual heavy cannons.
I love it.
