I don't know if this is me playing the game wrong or if I missed an important step or what, but I've hit a brick wall from the word go.

I've tried going to the free city, but I'm getting absolutely destroyed every time. Same thing with the bridge area. I've done a little bit of talking around HQ, but it doesn't seem to lead to anything new.

The bridge is a pretty difficult map, I'd recommend to go through the free city until you have better equipment. If you cannot get past the fights, it's perfectly fine to just ignore the enemies and just boost past them to reach the next area, which will be an area with friendly NPCs, quests and opportunities to obtain money and better weapons.

At some point you really do need to get used to the fighting though, it won't get much easier even with good body armor etc. It's very frantic and honestly I only manage to kill all enemies on some maps after I learn most of their location by heart.

So, I maganed to get through the Free City after toying around with different builds.

I found that the Ikon 30 MM Rufle worked very well, as well as playing with lines of sight. I noticed that I was able to get the drop on enemy mechs and kill them before they can really do anything.

I'm exploring the residential area now.

That is how I'm tackling mech combat as well, I've seen videos of people dodging and weaving through enemy fire but I just can't do it. So cheesing everything it is! (Though the game feels like it expects you to cheese it anyways)
