I’ll tell you why. I have always had distaste for Apple products, which mostly came from having to support them in a business environment for decades.

I was an Android guy for years, custom ROMs, etc. Loved it. Then all the privacy and tracking scandals appeared, and I slowly realized Google was just evil.

I don’t buy iPhones because Apple is good. I buy them, begrudgingly, because Google is the devil.

... But there are a multitude of security focused or at least de-googled android roms/oses.

I mean, i am not trying to be an ass, I do genuinely aporeciate your answer, and I totally get it.

But at the same time, you said you already have experience with custom ROMs...

And though yes, it is very annoying imo that many of the more well known ones seem to mostly focus on supoorting Google Pixels, but there are other supported phone mnfctrs and models you can combo with other custom ROMs.

Yes I ran de-googled phones for years. But the scandal that they were tracking phones even when all tracking was disabled was my last straw. I can’t trust them and I can’t trust the hardware. Could I have found something? Yes, but just like putting up with Microsoft’s bullshit, it became exhausting protecting myself from my own vendor, and I finally had enough.

I really wish there was a decent third option.

... Yeah. That makes sense.

So far, my hope is that someone develops at first just a stable de-googled ROM for a Nothing CMF phone, and then that can grow into being supported by a more security focused android ROM/distro.

You sound like you know more about the technicals about this than I do... afaik there are a few actually secure either android forks or just linux distros that run on android hardware... but they basically only support stupid expensive phones.

Would really be great if a decent quality, actually affordable, reasonably secure phone existed.

Agreed. I am waiting for just such a thing. Since it doesn't exist yet, I put up with these shitty iPhones.
