I would love to see a libre version or a version not released on Google Play. It would be possible to monetize it like FairMail or Threema Libre. It would be a win for all parties.

privacy for the end user
more customers for the sync team
advocacy for libre software

You can. People who want to crack it, will crack it. You're not inconveniencing them, you're inconveniencing legitimate users. Relay did no check that the app is paid, I just used the Pro version (which I bought). I personally don't even care if it's paid on Google Play, but using Play Services to check for the license is where it fails for me.
