What was she arrested for?

[–] adarza@lemmy.ca 32 points 4 days ago

for apparently escorting a defendant and their attorney out of her courtroom and courthouse via a door that wasn't being scoped-out by ice's goon squad.

She got arrested for letting someone use the backdoor. Uncommon but not illegal. They didn't have a signed warrant. The news of ICE agents staking the courthouse upset the judge so they allowed them to exit using back door.

The federal government arrested a judge appointed by the state for not allowing ICE to illegally arrest someone.

It's hard to get an unbiased view from the news, but what I saw:

ICE showed up at a courthouse, looking for a guy with an obviously immigrant-sounding name. He was due to appear in court over something. The judge allegedly had the dude (in her courtroom) go out the back staircase.

This is from a biased source, so I expect there's more to it, and I edited out the "he's an illegal criminal!" Crap they were saying in both articles I read.

The more to it is that if people start getting gulaged at their court dates, everyone stops showing up for court dates.

The judge wants justice for the crime she's hearing. And yeah, I'm sure she also doesn't approve of punishments in general without due process.

Thanks, that's some pretty important context from the judge's prospective.

The other side is that ICE wants to sow fear, making the legal process impossible and then they can point to that and say "see? We should just put everyone in a camp in El Salvador without trial!"
