My head canon - he's very slightly force sensitive like many others including the force healer who senses him instantly. There is a lot of this in old EU content, especially during the Republic when there were Jedi washouts all the time. Not to even mention outer rim folks the Jedi couldn't/didn't get to. The other best pilot in the galaxy was a Confederate guy about Anakin's age who was also likely semi-force sensitive. I don't think they want to go too deep into the mystical weewoo of the force in this series, which is supposed to be more relatable and grounded. But I really appreciate what appears to be a nod to those lucky few who are guided, literally, by divine providence.

I couldn't remember his name at first and had to look it up, but it's Tofen Vane from the Dark Horse Clone Wars comic series.
