I'm curious what the speed limit of the road was. It blows my mind how fast we let cars drive in residential areas. The fact that these kids can't walk 2 blocks safety between the grocery store and home-- or put another way, that if they don't use the crosswalk between home and the grocery store, there's a serious risk of death-- is such a failure of city planning and societal values.

Neither article mentions how far it would be had they used the crosswalk, but I'd guess, with a 4 lane road, for two kids it was really out of the way.

How heartbreaking. 7 years old. As a parent you can't say, "yeah, you can walk two blocks home,"? Land of the free, but no autonomy for people without a car.

Speed limits don’t work. The crazy thing is how North America routinely builds roads that are far too wide even if they’re just two lanes. There is no reason why a two lane suburban road should be three lanes wide + street parking but that’s just how the place is setup. This isn’t a random theory, either, but a very well documented problem.

Strange to say, since data in Australia shows that speed limit reductions in fact, have worked..

Speed limits will slow people down, just not nearly as well and as reliably as building roads properly. Despite having very little knowledge of Australia I have heard that police there can be pretty ruthless about speeding tickets, too.

Appropriately wide roads are better for everyone, even for drivers who don’t need to feel like they’re crawling when the speed limit is much lower than the road can physically support(even if it’s context cannot). Punishing some dangerous drivers after they’ve already done dangerous driving is so much less helpful than slowing people down to begin with.

And the best part is that slower roads are often made, especially when retrofitting existing ones, by putting in greenery and/or giving pedestrians and bicycles more elbow room and safe places to be.
