Though I will say for the point in the middle. Why did those people immigrate? And why to the UK in particular and in such large numbers? I feel like we both know the answer to that is colonization

Pretty much, I knew a Hong Kong asian family who emigrated because they made so much money in HK paying workers 1 dollar an hour they where able to buy a mansion in the UK. Its colonialism but often its the upper-middle class of the respective countries running these buisnesses, abliet a tiny minority ever manage too.
