Is New England really to blame for this? Sure, their union is getting sketchy, but aren't those states more liberal and chill than others?

Ignorant Middle European here, please educate if wrong

What you need to understand is that this drop in tourism is not only driven by a refusal to send money to a country that has shown utter contempt for us (and remember, any dollar spent anywhere in the US goes towards federal taxes), but also by genuine concerns over our safety. To go to Maine we still have to cross a border run by the feds, and risk harassment (or worse) by Trump's thugs. ICE are storming around the country rounding up whoever the fuck they like with no regard to any kind of legal process.

Why bother risking if? Why go to any part of that shithole? I might as well vacation in North Korea. No matter how deep blue the state, you're still going to find people there who voted for that psychopath, twice in many cases. I just can't think of a good reason to vacation there rather than go to a civilised country... Or just stay home. New Brunswick is fucking beautiful, plenty to do around here, and Nova Scotia or Quebec are just as far as Maine. Or we could hop on a plane and finally go see BC.

True, in NK you actually have to do something in order to get into trouble. Beyond that as I understand it, you're largely chaperoned around.

The Maine Governor can go tell Trunp to stop threatening our sovereignty. Canada’s not going back. Probably for generations.

The maine Governor is pretty based. She's currently in defiance against Trump's executive orders targeting civil rights for some citizens and is fighting them in court

Cool, best of luck to her. Still not going to the US this decade, if ever again.

Edit: the problem with america is NATIONAL, Maine isn't spared from what can happen to me for just being there.

You don't like what I've said, tough. I don't like allied countries threatening my country's sovereignty.

Oh and just because maine is "blue" doesn't meant there isn't maga there.

Edit 2: I truly love getting downvoted because I didn't go all rainbow and puppies.

Yo. I don't blame you. Border crossings are twice as hazardous and the US Government is hostile to foreigners. If I weren't American, I would think that too. As is, I kinda want to flee to Scotland

Yeah fuck that. A mari usque ad mare.

While yes New England is generally blue, we need to pressure New Hampsire (red) and Vermont (divided) to get rid of their republicans.

We are trying in NH, the governor might be a Republican but we've got Dems in the senate and house that are on the right side of history even if I hope to see more progressive candidates replace them soon.

New England purple is the most reasonable purple, if you ask me. I'm not biased, you are.

[–] Flickerby@lemm.ee 13 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The fact that NH motto is "live free or die" and yet it's the only place within like 1000 miles in any direction you can still get in shit over a joint is laughable

[–] Sombyr@lemmy.zip 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

NH is the weirdest, most inconsistent state in New England policy and law wise. Transgender rights are especially bizarre. They tried to ban us from bathrooms a few times and yet their transgender medicaid policies are some of the best in the country, covering electrolysis, which is fairly rare in the US, and even covers some cosmetic procedures like breast augmentation.
Vermont is weird similarly, having a significant amount of republicans and yet being one of the most progressive states in the country. New England states feel like they're having a perpetual identity crisis politics wise.

[–] Flickerby@lemm.ee 3 points 2 days ago

It's because the south is VERY Democrat but the north is full of republican rednecks which skews the electoral map

Maybe New England should declare independence. That would solve the problem. Until then, federal agents are free to operate within their borders.
