Truth is, if you’re not descended from the original colonists, every African American has lineage in the US farther back.
“White” in America is actually a moving goalpost that has been moving since literally the founding of the colonies. “Whites” at the founding of America were Anglo Saxons literally defined as being “English”, who are descended from Germans who subjugated the natives of the British isles (NOT THE IRISH, NOR THE SCOTS). “Whites” today now comprise literally every fair skinned ethnic background that isn’t east Asian. I shit you not, I think Hispanics who are fair skinned will be the next group subsumed into the white category, followed by fair skinned East Asians. Based on the American definition of white, I, darker than some light skinned African Americans, am white. Middle Easterners are legally considered white because, I shit you not, the Supreme Court in the early 20th century considered Jesus to be white by definition, and since Jesus was middle eastern, middle easterners must also be considered “white”.
Hispanic people were the "white people" where I grew up. It's not really a racial category, there are black Hispanic people, white Hispanic people, here it just means your family came from some Spanish speaking place. So the rich Cubans who came here were absolutely the "white people" of my youth. And historically, it's those Spanish Conquistadores who put the Hispanic into the Americas in the first place.
Oh absolutely. Latin America is super diverse; I just think at some point Hispanic whites won’t be categorized separately in the USA. At the moment, demographic information asks if you’re Hispanic or not as a separate question. It’s an amount of bending over backwards that’s crazy to me.
Funny story. Before the 1980s, Hispanic people were considered white. (Modern people praise I Love Lucy for including an "interracial" marriage, but people in the 1950s just saw a white couple). But since Hispanic people in America tend to be a bit culturally distinct from the ruling class, other white people wanted to be racist against them, and so the meme arose and spread that people of Spanish and Portuguese descent are a race distinct from all other people of European descent.
🤣🤣🤣
It's going to be fun seeing the administration trying to come up with a legal definition of white and hearing the outcry of MAGAists who suddenly discover they aren't "white".
