Lesser evil and such. Azerbaijan is friendly with Turkey and Israel, both of which are important regional partners for Europe. Gas needs to come from somewhere for a while. Azeris are also hostile to the Iranian regime.

Europe buys gas from Qatar as well, which isn’t exactly a paragon of humanist values.
