Is it just me or did his voice change a bit for this comic? The aliens seem less pointedly peculiar

No, I read it that way too. Every line except "maybe I do, maybe I don't" sounds more robotic.
They learned contractions
The word voice does not always refer to something audible. When describing writing, voice refers to the author's tone, word choice, rhythm, point of view, and so on.
It’s news to me that this strip received a cartoon deal. And the voice said “your intentional misrepresentation of my words was humorous.”
