Hey @PugJesus@lemmy.world do you know if the people of Iraq then are the same that currently live there? Or is it kind of like what happened to ancient Egypt
The people of ancient Egypt do, in fact, still live in Egypt. They're the same people, they just don't really speak Coptic anymore.
Then I got sold false facts lol. I was in Hurghada last year and talking to a cab driver there. He said that there was at some point a great muslim invasion and they drove out most of the original peoples of Egypt, but then again he was a taxi driver, not a historian.
Mostly it's that Egypt was culturally assimilated by Arabic-speaking invaders in the 7th century AD. The people, genetically speaking, are largely the same, as the Arabic-speaking invaders, while insistent on the supremacy of the Arabic language, generally intermarried freely with the Egyptians, and were not numerous enough to 'push out' (nor particularly interested in such a thing) the natives.

Okay so my source wasn't completly wrong, or maybe it was a language gap issue, either way thanks for them sweet deets!
I swear, if I ever need worldbuilding inspiration, I'll go talk to some cabbies.
