Donald Trump’s latest comments about allowing hundreds of thousands of Chinese international students into the United States have drawn criticism from some of the most outspoken members of the Republican Party.

Ahead of his meeting with South Korean President Lee Jae-myung at the White House on Monday, Trump told reporters that he plans to allow 600,000 Chinese students into the country — a figure more than double the number in the United States now.

It’s a sharp departure from an announcement Secretary of State Marco Rubio made in May, when he promised the United States would “aggressively revoke” visas for Chinese students and add more scrutiny to all future visa applications from China.

Head scratching. That doesn’t even align with the conservative agenda. Which university is filling Trumps pocket for him to make this decision?

[–] flandish@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

this is because trump is not a conservative, he’s a capitalist. like all republicans and democrats. they will phase in an out of various agendas if it means more profit.

Hardly a capitalist. I know in practice capitalism rigs the system for the ultra rich but theoretically it's supposed to be free market. He's a perfect example of a kleptocrat.

kleptocracy is a child of capitalism in its aged state.

[–] ganksy@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

I agree. It's late-stage capitalism in practice.

Don't get me wrong, Trump is 1000% a corrupt grifter who's never seen a bribe he didn't take. But I think there's more (and less) to it than that. If you look at his pattern of making decisions based on whatever he saw on Fox News most recently, it's increasingly clear that he's just fucking losing it and becoming dangerously suggestible as his dementia progresses. Any other leader with access to have a one-on-one discussion with him plays him like a damn fiddle.

And he's got Stephen "PeeWee Himmler" Miller whispering poison in his ear like Wormtongue. Many of the worst things coming out of this administration are straight from PeeWee Himmler.

The Chinese are very involved in Africa. They know very well how to deal with corrupt dictators. You make them happy you can do whatever you want.
