I love the purpose that he's serving right now, but when the 2028 presidential primaries roll around I hope he gets completely creamed and then goes away forever.

The impression I get from listening to him talk is that he is preparing to be president before 2028, just of a new nation.
Like you said he doesn't seem to think there will be an election ( I agree) so he is positioning himself to take California and some others and go.

Moving from Florida to Oregon was the best decision my wife and I ever made.
The real question is whether the mid terms next fall will happen. They can be avoided by a declaration of war.
It needs to be more than a declaration of war. We've had elections and midterms during war.
What's the purpose? Like, in a positive sense. I just see this as more liberal distraction from actual material change. Making people feel like there is a means of resistance within the current system that has become overcome by fascist.
It gives people the false sense of "something being done". When it gives us no more progress than a new episode of South Park.
The purpose is humiliation. That's it, really. Fascists NEED you to respect them. If not their governing, then you must respect their power and violence and stay in line. If you do not respect them, and laugh at them. They crumble.
