I'm also in the US and it used to be on PBS for years. It also aired in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Again, it was incredibly popular. Check the Wikipedia page.

Pretty sure outside of scifi circles it's niche. I can think of maybe two people I know that may possibly have heard of it.

At least in the US. It must have been more popular across the ocean
