Reminds me of the idiom, "things have to get worse before they'll get better" -- one could say these people are suffering from an addiction to right wing ideology and from the perspective empathy is the wrong choice until they choose and remain on the path to face and overcome their addiction.

I think that's analogy can make the line clear for those who suggest we do anything that would enable working class republican's political behavior.
