What wanted back then was Ukraine staying out of NATO and the EU and autonomy rights for Donbas(meaning russian would return as one of the offical languages and no more ethnic cleansing).

Ukraine walked away from this offer. Thousands could still be alive, but "slava utini!" was more important.
