Wait, (from the first link) the hiking emoji isn't real either? Could have sworn there was one with a guy (and a girl one) taking a step while holding a walking stick/staff.

How do the emojis get selected/assigned? It feels like tugging on that thread might help resolve this. They don't just randomly show up; someone decides to assign a unicode value, artists create the images for many platforms and emoji packs/fonts, code interprets the unicode and replaces it with the associated image.
