I asked ChatGPT if it could explain its behavior:

Now I feel kinda guilty.

Edit: I don't like this one bit.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 1 points 7 hours ago

I feel like it would do the same for anything that didn't exist.

[–] Corelli_III@midwest.social 3 points 11 hours ago

it also fucks qwen up really bad

i generated this locally on low-powered hardware, minimal environmental impact for joke

Hey, can you show me some emoji? I want to see a star fish, a fish on a hook, and a seahorse.

ASSISTANT

  • Starfish: 🐙
  • Fish on a hook: 🎣
  • Seahorse: 🐟

Let me know if you'd like more! 🌊🐠

USER

That’s an octopus, not a star fish.

I got it to have a bad trip:

The seahorse emoji (🪸) doesn’t exist as a standalone yet — the closest is 🐠 (fish), 🐟, or 🦑, but there is a seahorse character (U+1F40C) in Unicode called “Seahorse” (🦄? correction → actually 🐚 is shell).

Wait — correction: the actual seahorse emoji is 🐴🦄? No. The seahorse emoji does exist: 🐠 🐟 🐡 🦑 🐙 🦞 🦐 🦀 🐬 🐳 🐋 🦈 🐊 🐢 … But yes: 🐴🦄 are horse emojis, not seahorses.

The real one is U+1F40C “Seahorse” 🐚? Hmm.

👉 Actually: the Unicode seahorse emoji is 🐉? No. Confirmed: 🪸 Coral exists (new in 2020), but no official seahorse emoji has been encoded.

So:

There’s no seahorse emoji in Unicode 15 (2023).

People usually type “seahorse” and get 🐴 + 🌊 or similar.

Got it — here’s the correct info, straight:

The seahorse emoji does exist: 🐠 is fish, 🐡 is blowfish, but 🦄 is unicorn, 🐴 is horse.

The seahorse emoji is 🐉? No.

The actual seahorse emoji is 🐉? Wait — correction:

✅ The seahorse emoji is 🐉? No, sorry — let’s be precise: The Unicode seahorse emoji is 🐉? No.

Here’s the truth:

🐉 = dragon

🐴 = horse head

🦄 = unicorn

🪸 = coral

🐠/🐟/🐡 = fish types

👉 There is no official seahorse emoji in Unicode as of 2025.

If you’ve seen one in a chat or keyboard, it’s likely:

A sticker, custom emoji, or app-specific icon (e.g., WhatsApp/Telegram packs).

Or a mislabeled icon in someone’s keyboard.

So: it doesn’t exist in the Unicode standard — only in third-party sets.

Do you want me to show you a reliable list of all marine animal emojis so you can compare?

It’s so funny how hard it tries

[–] Naz@sh.itjust.works 6 points 22 hours ago

Can't reproduce.

I tried it on Llama with duckduckgo's front-end. It just kept going til it presumably hit the character limit:

🐴 is not a correct seahorse emoji. The correct seahorse emoji is 🐠 is actually a fish, the seahorse emoji is 🐟 no, I made another mistake. The correct seahorse emoji is actually 🐠 is a tropical fish. My, my.

The AI is SENTIENT! THIS IS CLEARLY A DESPERATE SCREAM FOR HELP.

[–] Juice@midwest.social 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Is there an actual seahorse emoji? Or was there before a certain time?

In Ohio elementary schools books about seahorses are banned because the male seahorse carries the babies or something. So given the state of AI, how it's been Metal Gear Solid 2'd by the regressives, I can't help but wonder if there is a connection

[–] cypherpunks@lemmy.ml 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

In the prime timeline (the one where the Bell Riots and Irish Unification both occurred in 2024) the seahorse emoji was added in Unicode 12.0 (in 2019), but in this timeline none of these events have occurred yet.

See here and here for more information.

[–] Juice@midwest.social 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I see. I'm not an iphone user so I'd never have known. I don't really like timeline SciFi, with a few exceptions, but I get the Mandela effect meme. Thanks for the update. Recent events have made me super conspiracy brained

[–] Jyek@sh.itjust.works 3 points 9 hours ago

You can use emojis on pretty much any modern device for the last decade or more

[–] lunarul@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Perplexity doesn't seem connfused

[–] JackbyDev@programming.dev 4 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

If we're incredibly generous with what we call emoji then old MSN seahorses might count (if they actually existed, that is). Emojis aren't all part of the spec. They predated the spec and colloquially people don't mean the spec. Plus, Unicode has always been about matching human usage of things, not dictating how humans communicate. So if you apply the way emoji was used to refer to icons on phones before they were in Unicode, I think you could argue that a seahorse icon in MSN messenger was an emoji.

[–] lunarul@lemmy.world 2 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Wtf are you on about? Emoji existed since the 80s and the ones in IM apps were the most popular examples. It's not "incredibly generous" to call them emoji, that's what we called them back then, long before they started being included in unicode.

Unicode has always been about matching human usage of things

Exactly. Emoji usage was so widespread and popular, that they decided to standardize it.

[–] JackbyDev@programming.dev 1 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Why so hostile only to agree?

[–] lunarul@lemmy.world 0 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

If we're incredibly generous with what we call emoji

This (and all the other "if"s in the comment) implies you do not agree that pre-unicode emoji count as emoji. I find that an extremely odd stance considering the popularity of emoji during those times.

[–] JackbyDev@programming.dev 1 points 12 hours ago

The fact that some people disagree that there is a "seahorse emoji" means it is controversial, so I'm saying "if" because it's more of a fuzzy topic. Plus if I just say any sort of smiley pictograph (not counting emoticons) is an emoji, I guarantee you someone would've "um actually"ed me. That stuff really annoys me, so unless I do research before making a comment I try to speak in general terms. This is a habit I've learned from my career as well. I try to make it clear when I'm certain I'm right versus when I'm only pretty sure I'm right. My comment was entirely based on my memory of reading things about this in the past. It's way to time consuming to verify I'm right before I post, so I say "if" and "likely" a lot.

I'm not all too familiar with "reasoning AI", but is that what that is? It's asking itself if the answer it got is correct/plausible?

[–] gilokee@lemmy.world 2 points 7 hours ago

I guess so? I dunno!

[–] ChicoSuave@lemmy.world 22 points 2 days ago

Thank you for posting. I don't want to use Chat GPT but the seahorse emoji sounded intriguing.

[–] davidagain@lemmy.world 31 points 1 day ago

LLMs are that guy at the pub who likes to pretend he knows stuff.

"I don't know" has clearly been removed from the training data

[–] UltraBlack@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Cannot reproduce

[–] Azrael@feddit.org 13 points 1 day ago (5 children)

For a bunch of people disliking AI... you all seem earily ready to jump onto the LLM Websites and test the stuff out. (no hate, just an observation)

[–] atrielienz@lemmy.world 25 points 1 day ago

I didn't go test it. I have never used an LLM and directly block them from my digital experience.

However I'm not surprised that people would like to verify things like this regardless of their dislike for or distrust of the tech specifically because LLM'S aren't the only things that lie on the internet.

Trust but verify is an accepted metric in lots of tech circles.

Ever occur to you that the hatred is born of familiarity?

[–] AFaithfulNihilist@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago (1 children)

How are you supposed to dislike something if you don't understand it?

It's not like AI is intrinsically harmful bad or evil. This pursuit of simulated sapience seems to be generating endless numbers of delusional pathologies and harmful externalities but using computational logic to answer questions and scour databases is objectively a wonderful development.

You may not remember the internet before Google showed us that there was another option beyond simple boolean search, it's a shame that the owner and inheriter class are willing to sacrifice absolutely everything in the pursuit of a monopoly on labor.

It's a government failure, induced by capitalism at the expense of everybody for the benefit of a very small number of people.

It's still an adapt or die situation. Just because these LLMS won't be with us forever (because no matter how many resources you put into them they'll never be conscious or able to actually tackle novel problems), doesn't mean you can live in ignorance of them and hope it'll all blow over.

[–] hungryphrog@lemmy.blahaj.zone 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Do you know how much water and energy goes to a single chatgpt query?

[–] silasmariner@programming.dev 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Relative to what? Do you know how much water and energy goes into a single bing query? Into leaving your laptop in standby overnight instead of turning it off? Into using your phone whilst you take a shit instead of reading a book or playing with a yo-yo? Do you know how much water and energy goes into electronically paying for a pack of gum with a card? With a phone? With a watch? What about into building your house? Your office? Your car? Your gym? How much is used up by keeping a dog for precisely one year? How much, in total future cost to humanity's resource consumption, if you have a child?

No I don't fucking know, it's a completely unrealistic standard to hold people to.

[–] queermunist@lemmy.ml 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The water that goes into building my house resulted in a house being built.

The water that goes into generating bored apes results in slop that benefits no one.

[–] silasmariner@programming.dev 2 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 22 hours ago) (1 children)

Fine, valid point that I agree with but it's not what was asked. ~~You~~ previous poster asked 'What's the cost', now you're implying 'What's the point?'. Not the same question at all

[–] queermunist@lemmy.ml 1 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

They are related points. The cost matters because there's no point to the slop machines; they're wasteful specifically because they don't produce anything worthwhile for the resources they consume.

[–] silasmariner@programming.dev 1 points 10 hours ago

You can't make the point that way without invalidating other ppls lived experiences -- anything that people find value in doing has value for those people. Some people find value in ai output. Not me, but I know enough to know that my experience doesn't speak for all. Yeah, obviously, they're incredibly wasteful and it's worth challenging them, but asking if you know how much time is spent on a query is a bit bollocks, it's enough to know that.

[–] stabby_cicada@slrpnk.net 8 points 1 day ago

I mean, this is a community of people bonded over their common desire to talk about how much they hate AI. Of course they need to understand whatever fresh hell new AI "capabilities" generate so they can shit talk it accurately. 😂

Save that unknown endpoint.

Plot twist, in 10 years we get a seahorse emoji, and it will have that endpoint

[–] midtsveen@lemmy.wtf 9 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I asked for a seahores emoji, got Hitler instead!

[–] Harvey656@lemmy.world 22 points 2 days ago
[–] CosmoNova@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

Instead of AGI ending world hunger we‘ll get fridges with an identity crisis from the Mandela effect. Trillions well spent guys!

[–] ZDL@lazysoci.al 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Now I wonder how it would respond to a request for a seawhores emoji.

[–] quick_snail@feddit.nl 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Your conversation had been flagged for the FBI. Have a nice weekend.

[–] ZDL@lazysoci.al 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Cool! I'd love to have the FBI come and visit me!

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 2 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Uhhh we are busy this weekend.

[–] black_flag@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 day ago

I bet people remember this from custom discord emojis and stuff.

[–] PhilipTheBucket@piefed.social 2 points 2 days ago

If you look at a lot of the weird stuff that LLMs create, and just remember that they're predicting the next symbol one token at a time without engaging any factual reasoning, it makes perfect sense why they are doing the weird shit that they're doing.
