Rules

  1. Please stay on-topic: post about otome games. Otome games are romance games aimed at women who want to romance men. For the purposes of this community, games with female love interests (LIs) count as long as it isn't mostly female LIs: men should be at least half of the LI options. Note that you do not have to be a straight woman to post: people outside the target demographic play too, and you are welcome here. Amare games will be allowed given how small the community on the Fediverse is for it, and how they overlap with otome, but if the community starts to overwhelmingly have non-otome amare posts I reserve the right to change this rule and redirect those posts to a new amare community.

  2. In an effort to keep this community more discussion-based, please only post fanart and the like if you made the art yourself. Your own fanart, cosplays, etc. are very welcome.

  3. Don’t be a jerk.

    • No bigotry or discrimination. This includes but is not limited to homophobia, racism, sexism, etc.
    • Be respectful of other peoples’ tastes. You may absolutely despise an LI and want to discuss it, and that’s fine. Casting negative aspersions on or directly insulting people who love that LI is not fine. What we find interesting in fiction does not always directly translate to real-life desires.
  4. Please don’t directly link to pirated content.

  5. Tag any NSFW content as such. If you are not sure whether to tag it that way, err on the side of caution and tag.

  6. Please indicate spoilers. The following format works on both Lemmy and Kbin, but if you are using an app it may not. See this comment for which apps handle spoilers. Note that spoilers in post bodies will just show the text in the preview if you link the post in, say, Discord, instead of spoiling it.

Spoilers for OtomeGame: The GameSomething that happened at the end of the game! Something else that happened at the end of the game!

That will appear as:

7. When advertising something you have worked on (think your own otome review website, or an otome game you have worked on), please use common sense for what is spammy. If there's about four new posts here weekly, don't post a progress update weekly—we don't want self-promotion overwhelming the community. But finding new otome creators is cool, so do post them here every once in awhile! I reserve the right to change this rule to be more specific about what exactly counts as spammy and what does not, but I feel I'll know it when I see it and trust most posters to operate in good faith.

Our backup community is !otomegames@lemmy.zip.

Q: Why is this needed?A: TL;DR: We have had to start over a lot due to instances dying.

  1. First, otome on Lemmy/Mbin started with Kbin, at [!otomegames@kbin.social](/c/otomegames@kbin.social), which went down when kbin.social had federation issues and eventually went down.
  2. Then we moved to [!otomegames@kbin.run](/c/otomegames@kbin.run), which went down when kbin.run unexpectedly vanished.
  3. So we moved again to !otomegames@ani.social, where we can hopefully stay. If not, we jump to…
  4. !otomegames@lemmy.zip.

Typically we think of otome games as visual novels. But I have played quite a few text-based games where you can play as a woman with a bunch of (male) love interests. Usually no or few images, definitely no CGs, but your choices affect the story and often characters' opinions of you. Some are more focused on the relationships, some less. I was wondering how many people play otome who also play these interactive fiction games, or vice versa, how much the audience for both overlaps. Was also wondering if some IF might qualify as otome.

Well, lemm.ee went kersplat. Wondering if we and !visualnovels@ani.social should absorb it or not. @Essence_of_Meh@lemmy.world

Thought about this because I came across https://www.filfre.net/2025/09/choose-your-own-adventure/ and it was a good read and wanted to post it somewhere here.

How active was the adventure games community? Is there anything to absorb of are we talking about "yeah, let them post once in a blue moon"?

Personally, I wouldn't mind but with two stipulations:

  • Titles posted should preferably have SOME, even minimal, amount of visual elements. Doesn't have to be full-on visual novel but opening to text only titles could muddy the focus of the VN community.
  • It should be temporary, with a proper adventure games or interactive fiction community as an end goal in the (near?) future.

Both of those points depend on my initial question though - how active was the original community?
If it was small and chill then the first requirement shouldn't be too bad (this content won't take over the VN front page, even if it's not particularly active). If it had a decent amount of traffic on the other hand, making a new community shouldn't take too long - serving as a temporary life-line for the folks looking for a new home is doable in this case.

It's a tentative "yes" for me but mostly as a supportive measure rather than a permanent expansion. I'd prefer to keep the VN community within its niche.

Small and chill. I was only asking about IF, which was absorbed under !adventuregames (I think the two are separate genres?). I'll respect your wishes and avoid posting pure IF there! Thank you for replying

Ah, my bad. I thought we were talking about both since Berin mentioned them combined together under single community before (I believe it had less with being the same genre and more with the number of members for either of them). But yeah, let's just stick to stuff with at least a smidge of relevancy.

That said, if someone ends up creating a new community for these games feel free to drop me a tip - I'll be more than happy to share it for visibility.
