Why are Democrats trying to make deals with fascists is the real headline.
Yeah... that's how things work. What, should they just bring in guns and kill them all? No, their job is to get the best outcome they can get (in their opinion). You can let the Fascists do whatever they want or you can try to make it as painless as possible while they progress. I prefer the latter.
It's the citizenry's job to fight them. Legislators do what they can in congress to slow them down and we fight them where we can. Giving up all power in congress is stupid. It should be used as best as possible, which is not just giving up.
TBF it is their job attend legislative sessions. I agree with the spirit of your comment.
To answer your question... clearly the weren't trying that hard.
I disagree. I would argue that their job is to represent their constituents. Sometimes that might involve attending legislative sessions. Other times that might involve intentionally not engaging with the opposition party, if that is in the best interests of the constituents.
In this case, not engaging would mean intentionally choosing to shut down a government that has services that directly impact those constituents. Meeting with them is the bare minimum of their job.
I can’t imagine Trump had any good faith negotiations so it’s a fool’s effort, but it’s their job to try, nonetheless.
They should be shutting down the government. Not doing so is a derelection of their duty to their constituents and the constitution. Shutting down the government prevents DJT from doing more damage. Its a way the can actually stop/ stem the bleeding while being in the minority, and it would also show them having some spine.
Going into any kind of negotiations with Trump is idiotic. Its not their job to keep giving Trump everything he needs to destroy the country.
Well now you just sound impossible to please and completely ignorant of your own civic system.
Sorry.
I'm neither. I want the opposition party to be an opposition party when its important to do so, like it is now.
That means not trying to find common ground with fascists.
That's what they're doing. I'll be the first to gripe the DNC as a whole but the way you're mischaracterizing things is not helpful.
As per the article:
Its not a mischaracterization to say I don't agree with what the Democrats are doing. They shouldn't be negotiating to keep the government open. Period. They can stop things from happening by shutting the thing down and preventing the real day to day damage. Don't open it back till after the midterms, and sure as shit don't do anything that Republicans will spin to help themselves.
I've been through two shut downs/ near shutdowns as a freddie. Its fine. Shut it down.
