they are downvoting but that's exactly how it goes.
i have an old phone with a bad battery i use for just this. "sorry boss, it discharged".
I proudly accept their downvotes as their protest against the status-quo. In effect saying: "too real". My last employer "asked" us to all install an app to access the office doors, and then mandated return-to-office, so I'm right there with you. :)
wasting you time commuting when you could very well be doing it from home (or even a phone) should be a crime.
