Yeah but he didn’t have Valyrian steel only regular steel.
Didn't his sword get melted to make the lannister ones? At the start of the episode after red wedding?
That was Ned Stark, Rob is his son.
Makes sense. The timing of it made me assume it was Rob's sword, because it was just after the red wedding.

Valyrian steel is implied to have someone sacrificed and have their blood/soul bound into the sword, hence blood magic presumably keeps it sharp.
