Pretty much from the start, the Marvel Universe mixed up villains and heroes. Daredevil fought Sub-Mariner, Spider-Man had a run in with Dr. Doom, Sand Man fought the Fantastic Four. It took DC a while to catch on.

True, but, this meme aside, I’d still say that Sauron and the Savage Lands are most commonly associated with the X-men

You're absolutely right, Ka-Zar and the Savage Land are introduced in X-Men #10 and Sauron in X-Men #60. He's definitely an X-Men villain.
