Surprising that any groomer would do this. You’re really not supposed to shave huskies, they have a natural undercoat that you’re not supposed to fuck with, it’s what regulates their temperature naturally.

This image has been around for ages. There was supposedly a medical reason that they had to shave the dog.

Yeah this groomer needs to be fired, I assume they have no training or experience. This is a pretty bad thing to do to certain breeds.

Edit: looking at the context in the photo, this is either a really amateur home groomer or somebody just shaving their own dog. The caption might have been added later.

Someone completely shaved my mom's dog like this, and now half of her fur won't grow back.

[-] Oldmandan@lemmy.ca 25 points 1 year ago

Yeah, post-shaving alopecia is a thing, especially in double coated breeds. (Which is part of the reason you're supposed to avoid shaving them.)

The petco groomer decided to shave my dogs' entire ass because he "didn't want to brush out butt tangles today", his exact words when we went to collect our dog.

He's a great Pyrenees Collie mix.

His hair went from long and silky with an undercoat, to frizzy, thick, unmanageable mess that has to be brushed twice a day to prevent mats.

Congrats bitch, now my dog will never have his hair be normal again because you didn't want to do your job right.

That sucks. I'm sorry that happened to you.

She's a pomeranian mix I think

[-] aceshigh@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Oh yeah. That’s the one breed I read about whose coat will get damaged if it’s shaved. I’m sorry to hear about the dog.

I did an image search: this one has been kicking around since mid-2017. There are various captions with it.

[-] aceshigh@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

I hope the dog fully recovered since then.

[-] Orbituary@lemmy.world 19 points 1 year ago

First time on the internet, I see. Godspeed.

[-] someguy3@lemmy.ca 19 points 1 year ago

There must have been a reason.

[-] Duranie@midwest.social 18 points 1 year ago

When I've seen this I've wondered if the dog got into some wet concrete, tar, or something irreversibly damaging to their coat.

[-] stebo02@sopuli.xyz 10 points 1 year ago

yeah I'm thinking of some medical treatment maybe?

I feel so bad for the poor husky. His coat would most probably not grow back well and his thermal regulation is fucked for good.

[-] intensely_human@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago

Huskies’ natural environment is like Siberia isn’t it? Would it be okay to shave a husky in a tropical climate (assuming the decision to own a husky in a tropical climate’s too late to undo)

[-] Cethin@lemmy.zip 17 points 1 year ago

Dog's hairs actually can work like radiators. Their heat transfers to the hair and they have a lot more surface area than skin. I don't know about huskies and other cold weather dogs, but generally their hair can actually be useful to cool them, not just keep them warm.

[-] venoft@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Once you shave a husky it's very difficult to get the undercoat hair to grow back normally. It will be all clumpy and patchy. And the coat can also help to keep them cool, although I don't know about tropical heat. You'd probably have a sad dog then..

[-] Esca@lemmy.one 3 points 1 year ago

They have two layers. In the summer you want to brush out the insulting undercoat, but leave the topcoat as it protects against sunlight. A shaved husky will overheat in the sun and can easily get skin cancer! It also doesn't grow back properly. The husky in this picture will never have a normal coat again as it has his fur ruined for the rest of his life.

There isn't any valid medical reason that requires to shave a husky entirely. Only people who don't understand how their coat work do it. It is basically animal abuse and it makes me sad every time I see this picture.
