I was gonna bring up the human batteries in the Matrix, but I like your thing better.

This still pisses me off.

The original idea was they use our brains for processing power. Which actually makes sense.

But the studio thought people would have trouble understanding that.

The people who would have trouble understanding that wouldn't be good candidates for matrix insertion though, so there's at least some symmetry.

They have the same wetware and clearly aren't using it. That gives the machines extra downtime to run on. They're excellent candidates.
