Hi people,
I'm using a non NAS disk (Seagate Exos X18) on TrueNAS and a few days ago I found it degraded.
Now I'm planning to reconfigure the whole NAS in order to stay safe in the future even If don't really know why it happened. My solutions are 2:
- buy another Seagate Exos X18 16TB to configure a RAID
- buy 2 NAS HDD, like Ironwolf PRO but having less space and spending more
Then I'have another option, buy one SSD sata for NAS, do I need a RAID to stay safe even if they are SSD?
What you think is the best option?
Thanks :)
NAS drives come with a longer warranty and are a bit optimized for 24/7 operation. As to and SSD, if you need uptime, then RAID. SSD can fail just as an HDD. Also, keep in mind that RAID is not a backup. Also, with backups, ideally, follow the 3-2-1 rule: https://www.backblaze.com/blog/the-3-2-1-backup-strategy/
