WINNER: FLAMMULATED OWL 55-52

The first match of the day pits a large owl with small eyes against a small owl with large eyes.

The Great Gray is the second largest owl left in the tournament, longer than the BFO, but not near as massive. GG was a bit polarizing for you guys. Some loved the gentle looking giant, while others couldn't get down with the large facial disc or tiny eyes. Can this big owl win big today?

On the opposite side of the spectrum, we have the second smallest owl left. The Flammulated Owl is just a bit bigger than the Pygmy Owls, the Owlets, and the Elf Owl, but it is still very tiny at 6 in / 15 cm long and 2 oz / 60 grams in weight. That's about the length of a ballpoint pen and the weight of a tennis ball. Somehow this tiny titan was able to slip past the legendary Great Horned Owl in its just match due to its namesake flammulated pattern and big loveable eyes.

You all seem to be favoring a lot of the small owls, but also the large Fish Owls, so I'm not sure how this match will play out. Upvote your favorite below!

I'm sorry my flammulated friend; the great grey owl's alliterative acumen eclipses even cuddly cuteness.

Did you vote for GG? I'm not showing any votes for either owl a couple minutes after you posted. If this is close, I don't want your vote to get missed!

I did vote -- it's showing as 4 for GG and 2 for flammulated on my phone. Maybe it's just slow to filter through?

Huh, I see it in a different app. It also shows in this one, but only when collapsed. Guess I'll need to file a bug report. Thank you!

Dunno about littlebluespark up there, but I based a D&D character on the Flammulated Owl, complete with background that played with its IRL cultural tendencies, diet, biome, etc. Our DM was happily impressed (and I think a li'l smitten with the reference pics, because who wouldn't be?!), and he let me find an Owlin-made "Inflammulated Cloak" that gave my guy a nice bonus to blend into woodland terrain and a boost to Intimidate checks - which was extra fun with his Gunslinger class. (picture him like a young Archimedes from Sword in the Stone, btw.) :D

That is very interesting! I wasnt aware there was an Owlin race now. A small-human sized owl with human intelligence AND gunslinging abilities would be something to reckon with! All while having flight, stealth, and raised dexterity. Not a bad character to have in a party!

Truly! I didn't know of this guy until seeing him up against the legendary Great Horned (looking at you, Secret of NIMH), but I've also made a little owlin PC for 5e! A fidgety li'l artificer (pretty sure Gunslinger isn't canon, but they're only guidelines anyhow!) based on the Burrowing Owl with a poncho, bandoliers, and a tasseled round hat, but fascinated by bottling "storm surge" so he made EMP/ion weapons.

Uh oh, it isn't tied anymore. I don't know hoo to root for in this one. I'm glad Flammy is getting recognition out of all this if nothing else, it's a cool lil dude.

Even if it doesn't win the tourney, it's won our hearts, what with all that flammulation

[-] anon6789@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

It sure has! I feel a lot of people will be walking away with some new favorite owls, even if they didn't win.

That's the real prize if you ask me!

He's the BEST! ๐Ÿค—๐Ÿ’•

I'm glad you like it!

Is it a new owl to you, or have you known about them before?

[-] dragonfly@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

I love how they look like they're made out of bark and lichen.

They do! This guy has to be one of the toughest to spot in the wild, between the size and how camo it has to be in person.
