I laugh every time I think of how the "independents" and non-trumpers were all mansplaining about how this weird man was going to sail to a victory in the primary, and then the general. Because something something "reasonable independents" and "moderate principled conservatives" and "trumpish without the baggage" and the left is too woke and too extreme for all the supposed Enlightened Centrists (TM) that are supposedly out there waiting to have their vote harvested by the likes of DeSADIST.

Pretty sure that was all before he doubled down on attacking disney, showing he was willing to waste money failing to kneecap his own states economy for a pissing match in the culture war.

Up to that point, you could sorta make the argument that he was a smarter and less self-sabotaging trump.

After that point, it was clear he was just a quieter trump.

I get what you are saying, but these people were also saying these kinds of things to people like me in a very condescending manner, apparently not aware, or completely ignoring, that he's weird and has a grating voice and just generally does not seem capable of even pretending to be human. I think they were just reading how he was "owning the libz" and liked what they were seeing in that regard, and did little analysis beyond that. And also ignoring that their party loves donnie like no other Republican candidate.

But these Enlightened Centrists (TM) love to pretend as if the Republican Party is not just chock full of Republicans.

...... Those are all the reasons why trump had no chance to win at all, right before he nabbed the primary.

Of course they ignored them. They worked great for the last guy.
