The "tears" are actually tree sap. Tears is an old timey way of referring to tree sap. When you cut a tree for its sap, the tree "cries".

But sap is actually tree blood. If you cut a tree, does it not bleed?

This means that Canadians are tree vampires because of maple syrup.
