So it's not an explosion? It's just a messy boiling over? So the cartoon guy up there in OPs cartoon needs to find a more effective method of escape?

Ever seen Watchmen? Getting covered in boiling hot oil is more than enough to kill you. And the worst part is its a slow and painful death as you get third degree burns on your whole body and then die a couple days later from your organs shutting down one after the other. People tend to forget how important their skin is.
