I've never seen him play anything other than a stoic dick. It's almost hard to think of him as a nice guy.

I'm sure many (American) people think Hugh Laurie is like House in real life too 😂

[-] Dagamant@lemmy.world 20 points 10 months ago

American here, I’m a big fan of Stephen Fry so I knew about him from A Bit of Fry and Laurie. I know I’m an outlier in the statistics.

British people know how sophisticated he really is

[-] Halosheep@lemm.ee 8 points 10 months ago

I was VERY surprised when I heard his real accent as a kid.

[-] Death_Equity@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago

So were the production team of House. They totally thought he was an American and were surprised when he first spoke with them in his natural voice.

That's the power of acting and when done by a master, it's hard to imagine anything other than what they give us.

[-] Anticorp@lemmy.world 5 points 10 months ago

I'm pretty sure this is the first picture I have ever seen of him with a genuine smile on his face. In all his movies he doesn't actually smile, he does a condescending sneer.

The one, the almighty? And voice of the One True God?

I'm so grateful you were here because I typed that all out as if on reflex and realized it was a bit much and deleted it but it felt so naked not to say the whole thing!

[-] Hazmatastic@lemm.ee 4 points 10 months ago

Right back at you lol it felt naked to me too. Sometimes you just gotta

Saw a movie earlier with him in it called Bottle Shock. Title might be one word. He plays a smug character but really he is just British in the movie. Came out in 2008. It was about California making wine. I enjoyed it but it is by no means thrilling. If you have watched everything else you want to see, go for it.

[-] cashews_best_nut@lemmy.world 4 points 10 months ago

Wait, do Brits come across as smug?

[-] Death_Equity@lemmy.world 7 points 10 months ago

The posh ones, yes. The banter doesn't help the rest.

Americans take banter personally.
