I used to use MyFitnessPal but its pop up ads are particularly annoying and paying $20 for an ad free version doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Yes, it does. I've used macrofactor for a while now and the app is great.

They have barcode scanning, as well a nutrition label scanning for things that aren't in their database.
