Russian sailors: Can we get CIWS to counter USV?
Russian Naval command: No, we have CIWS at home
The CIWS at home:
The weird thing is this landing ship actually has a proper CIWS, a pair of AK-630 CIWS turrets, but I have not seen them used in any of these drone attack videos. I wouldn't be surprised if they were non-functional, like many of the armaments on the Moskva, the (sunk) Black Sea Fleet's flagship.
Might be the answer there, shooting surface vessels was likely outside the design requirements. Sea ‘skimming’ ASMs still fly tens of meters above sea level to avoid wave swell.
Hence the doubling of depression angle on the v2, but knowing Russian modernization I doubt many ships have that upgrade - yet, or ever tbh the way naval denial is shaking out. Why play the sunk cost game of naval force protection when a five to six figure suicide drone or ASM can knock out your multi-million surface combatants?
"sunk cost" 🤭
I mean, fuck Russia but that was a pretty epic watch
You gotta feel for anyone whose job on your billion-ruble warship is to be the man-portable CIWS.
While Russia is losing warships because they don't have enough close-range deck weaponry with the ability to throw enough lead downrange, some rando's project in the US being used to shoot at little UAVs for fun:
