Didn't get it either at first but I think they are referring to their total watchtime being about a year, not having started anime a year ago.
Oh, well I feel dumb then…
This, probably. Though it's still a lot.
The profile page OP linked says "Since 2006", so ~17 years.
But as you said, that's still a lot. I didn't start too much later and am "only" at 128.8 days.
